Sometimes it is just hard for people to come to terms with the fact they are struggling. Some have developed the coping skill of just not talking about what is bothering them. Some have struggled with some forms of abuse, mental health, depression, anxiety, domestic violence, change and separation. Breakthrough counseling is here to help those who have struggled in silence but would like to work on breaking through the chains of addiction, dependency, and codependency or just being stuck in lives they don’t want. This does take time but it is about work and if you would like to have help to go on this journey of life please call.

I specialize in trauma, c-PTSD, grief, and codependency.
You’ve been to doctors and done all the tests. You’ve changed your diet, done the meditation apps, you go to yoga. You read the books and have done therapy: the programs, CBT, EMDR, mindfulness. You’ve worked on turning off screens before bed. But you are still plagued by the migraines, the stomach “issues,” the hives, rashes, flareups and 3am wake-ups. Chronic pain is the pits, and brain fog makes you feel like you are just surviving. Is it burnout? Menopause? Overwhelm? You think: why is no one listening to me? Something is wrong. I just can’t do this anymore. You're ready to dig in and make some major changes, but what to do?

Therapy is one of the most meaningful journeys you can take, and it is also hard work. When we work together, you will feel supported and challenged in the best way. From the very first session, we will set clear intentions for what you want to achieve, and I will be beside you every step of the way. Clients often describe me as deeply invested (“When I talk to her, I can tell she is really present with me”) and caringly direct (“She is honest and pushes me, but always with compassion”). I love this because it means I am creating a space for honesty and growth while also encouraging you toward the breakthroughs you are seeking.

Thriving in life is a great feeling. Just surviving can be a first step but it ultimately leads to exhaustion over time. Whether the issue is trauma, addiction or interpersonal conflicts, acquiring life skills is important to move towards happiness. Flexibility in thinking leads to creative problem-solving of issues. Boundaries can help with taking care of oneself and others. Negotiation is fundamental to maintaining good relationships. All of these can be learned and practiced to gain mastery in life and open up other options.

My ideal client would be someone who desperately wants change and is ready to be curious, engaged, and deliberate with their growth. You would be open to creative and alternative approaches, and perhaps you've had many other 'failed' attempts at therapy. I enjoy complex cases, people trying to navigate difficult relationships, and being able to validate the struggles that you've been through. If you want to learn more about your mind, body, brain, past, and psyche and turn that knowledge into actionable steps toward wellness, we'll be a great fit!

Creating successful relationships and lives as an adolescent, adult or couple is one of the central challenges we all face. I am a Gestalt based psychotherapist who works to help clients discover their potential and explore the blocks that may be getting in their way. My work starts with the premise that each of us has within us what we need to live grounded and fulfilling lives. My goal with clients is to help them build awareness to what is occurring in the moment as a springboard for potential change. Through process oriented therapy, I believe we all can get through challenges that emerge in life.

I believe that “trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.” I work with those who have experienced various forms of trauma, including shock, developmental, medical, relational, and religious trauma. I also work with those experiencing forms of depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and those experiencing systemic and cultural forms of oppression. I believe that everyone has the right to a nurturing and supportive space, and I strive towards the ongoing creation of an inclusive environment for all.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
