Whether it's stress, depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship or family concerns, the emotional toll of an illness or a trauma, I have a strong record of helping my clients achieve their mental health goals. I am eager to support your efforts to move forward, address your challenges, and lead a fuller life. Sometimes we feel stuck in our lives. It takes courage to admit that everything we have tried to get ourselves unstuck has not worked. It also takes courage to contact a therapist for the first time, or if you have been in counseling before, trying it again.

Change, although inevitable, can be difficult and feel ruthless especially when life takes a turn you don't expect. We can start feeling lost, alone and out of touch with ourselves and those around us. Each of us are vulnerable to the pain , grief and the uncertainty of the human condition. In this way, I believe we can each benefit from a safe and non-judgmental space that allows us to put our guard down and encourages us to learn, be flexible and rest more fully into the natural process of simply being ourselves and listening to our own wounds.

For many clients, achieving their goals means increasing their capacity for acceptance of themselves and others, empathy and understanding of others, and being able to manage and share their emotions. I believe that a positive outcome of a successful counseling relationship is much more than the absence of symptoms or illness . Rather, it's the sustained ability to enthusiastically engage in all aspects of life: relationships, marriage and family, work, friends, and community.

Because of my extensive experience in addictions, I do have a great deal of experience with individuals coping with chronic pain , medical conditions and difficulty coping.
If I were to say if I had a type of client, it would someone that wants help. If there is a need for me to work harder than the person coming for the therapy session, then maybe they just might not yet be ready to address some of the deeper-rooted issues that led them to step out and ask for help. I know I try to remain more attuned and aware that the readiness to change is key to the success of therapy for a client. I want to work in tandem with the person to reach the goals they have set for themselves.

People can heal from trauma. But you don't have to do this alone. People pleasing, relationship stress, anger, chronic pain , addictions, shame, insecurity; just a few ways trauma tends to show itself in your life. When people decide to get curious about how the wounding moments in life have impacted their self-worth and overall worldview-healing can occur. You deserve to heal. And you deserve support through this process. I help people let go of shame, rediscover who they are, and find reasons to smile again. I would be honored to help discover what healing looks like for you, should you choose to no longer travel that path alone.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
