Hey! I’m Kayla, and I have a laidback and eclectic approach to therapy. If you’re looking for a strictly-xyz therapist, I’m not your girl. However, if sarcasm and cursing feels more comfortable for you, I might be just who you’re looking for. I believe laughter is the best way to the heart, and very much needed for healing to begin. I really enjoy working with women and the queer community, especially around issues such as trauma, self-esteem, depression, and anxiety.

When my clients first reach out to me, they typically have tried many strategies on their own. They are dealing with conditions and challenging life events such as anxiety, depression, illness, grief, loss, divorce, family issues, life transitions, or trauma. They feel overwhelmed, and while they know they want relief, finding their way forward has become difficult. I help my clients clarify goals, outline steps forward, and leverage their strengths to create the lasting change they seek.

"As long as you are breathing, there is more right with you than wrong with you, no matter how ill or how hopeless you feel." These words by mindfulness teacher, Jon Kabat Zinn, are the foundation for my work with clients as I guide them through the suffering that all of us, as humans, experience. Sometimes these difficulties are new and sometimes they are longstanding. Whatever you are facing, I will work with you to help you to increase awareness of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are blocking access to the innate feeling of well-being and the joy of being alive.

People try to make sense of their world as they perceive it. This is why people struggle with depression, anxiety, emotional regulation and expression, addiction, etc. Overall, I believe people want to understand what makes them who they are. Through understanding their struggles and being able to choose different ways of thinking, acting, and feeling, people can learn to be the best version of themselves.

Therapeutically, I have always been drawn to the way we relate to the body. Your body is your home, but many of us feel disconnected from ourselves due to the pressures and oppression we face in the modern world. I have worked with clients on many of these spots of disconnection ranging from eating disorders to chronic illness to sexuality and pleasure. Using the tenets of Acceptance and Commitment therapy, mindfulness, and sex therapy approaches, I hope to make this space feel a little more like home again.

Consistent with my view that every individual is unique, my psychotherapeutic approach is thoughtfully tailored to meet the specific needs of each client. Relying on a foundation of divrse educational and supervisory experiences, my conceptualization of cases often incorporates more than a single school of psychological thought, which translates into an integrative approach to treatment. Within this framework, my therapy generally considers the affective, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological systems of the individual in the context of the social and transpersonal realms in which the person functions.

I believe that “trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.” I work with those who have experienced various forms of trauma, including shock, developmental, medical, relational, and religious trauma. I also work with those experiencing forms of depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and those experiencing systemic and cultural forms of oppression. I believe that everyone has the right to a nurturing and supportive space, and I strive towards the ongoing creation of an inclusive environment for all.

Cancer Therapists

How does cancer affect mental health?

A cancer diagnosis is a major life event that can significantly influence the mental health of any individual. Being diagnosed with cancer often introduces a sense of uncertainty about the future, which can cause clients to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and significant distress. Many cancer patients may also worry about the toll that their diagnosis may have on their family, their physical health, their job, and their financial situation. The compounding of such stressors can also decrease mental health in clients and may lead to additional symptoms that can influence mental health, such as sleeping difficulties or social withdrawal.

What is the best psychological therapy for cancer patients?

The best type of psychological therapy for cancer patients is highly dependent on the needs of the individual. The therapy type that a client benefits from may also depend on what stage of the cancer journey they are in. Recently diagnosed cancer patients, for instance, may benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which can help clients develop skills to manage the emotional distress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Alternatively, cancer patients further along in their journey may benefit from therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or other forms of mindfulness therapy to help manage symptoms or physical pain associated with treatment. Clients may also consider group therapy, which offers cancer patients an opportunity to receive support from other individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Are there any risks or drawbacks in going to therapy while dealing with cancer?

Although attending therapy while dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be helpful, one major concern for cancer patients can be the financial cost of seeking therapy. Many therapists are out-of-network, meaning they do not accept insurance, and thus clients are expected to pay the entirety of the session fee. Since many cancer patients may be out of work as a result of their diagnosis or cancer treatment regimen, the costs of therapy sessions can be substantial. Luckily, many cancer centers and local clinics may offer free or substantially reduced-cost counseling services to cancer patients and their families. In addition, cancer patients may be eligible for grants or other forms of funding from local agencies and nonprofits to seek therapy for their cancer diagnosis. Such opportunities can be very helpful for cancer patients, as they allow clients to obtain the benefits of therapy without the financial strain.

How long does cancer therapy typically last?

The length of cancer therapy depends on the needs of each client. In some cases, cancer patients may only require therapeutic support during the period following their initial diagnosis—to help manage the uncertainty and shock of a cancer diagnosis. In other cases, clients may choose to receive therapy throughout their treatment, and even following, their cancer journey. Pursuing therapy for a longer period of time can help clients develop a deeper relationship with their therapist and provide opportunity to process the challenges presented by cancer treatment, such as physical pain, and challenges associated with cancer survivorship, such as ongoing identity concerns, physical limitations, or relationship challenges.
