Depending on your unique needs, I utilize various clinical approaches such as attachment-based therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, existential therapy, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and trauma-focused therapy.
Hello, I'm Carl. My counseling style is deeply rooted in a client-centered, empathic, humanistic, and non-judgmental point of view. As an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, I believe strongly in the inherent worth and dignity of every person. I also hold a firm belief that everyone has the ability within themselves to not only enact change but also be their very own change agent. I believe that recognizing our own strengths and understanding how we've used those strengths to succeed in the past can be incredibly useful in reducing acute symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.

Additionally, I draw from IFS, attachment-based work, polyvagal theory, NVC and more.
When life is too much, allow me the honor to help you come home to self and make life beautiful. I work with clients who genuinely want to find resilience, wholeness and beauty in life. My clients are diverse in race, ethnicity, spirituality, gender and sexual identity and nationality. Many tend to be caring, service-oriented people. Some are quite creative. Therapy and self-care help them to be stronger for themselves first, but also for those they love, in their career and for the world at large. "I have arrived. I am home." -Thich Nhat Hanh

I have experience working with people experiencing attachment issues, complex trauma (CPTSD), religious trauma, PTSD, mood disorders, and relationship issues. My particular focus is on religious trauma due to the deep and often hidden scars it can leave that show up in our daily lives. I love being able to provide a safe space for clients to explore and process their experiences, recognizing the profound impact that religious environments and beliefs can have on an individual's mental health.

My eclectic approach draws on The Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM), Attachment-Based Practices, Somatic Interventions, Ego States, Motivational Interviewing, and Systems Work.
I am available to serve clients located in PA & OH. I take a holistic approach to healing, because more often than not the environments that contribute to strife are all encompassing. The path to healing is not linear, I enjoy aiding clients through an eclectic approach tailored to fit their needs. It's not about what's wrong with you- it's about what happened to you. I do not view clients as a diagnosis, but dynamic individuals navigating the human experience.

Was your childhood often painful, difficult, or scary? Did you feel alone, invisible, or unloved? Maybe the past is just a blank. Or are you going through a difficult time in your life, frozen with worry, grieving, or overwhelmed and exhausted? Do you need to leave a situation that feels abusive or break a toxic pattern? Repeated disturbing memories, physical sensations, thoughts, or dreams can be signs of trauma. It may feel hard to be your real self, or that you over-react and can't stop. Your feelings might be extreme. Whether these are new or recurring symptoms, you can heal and lead a healthier and more authentic life.

Do you spend time thinking about the past or constantly worried about the future? Do you seek to know yourself better? I help people change the habits and behaviors that are not serving them, so they can lead more peaceful and balanced lives here in the present moment. We will work together to understand how your past informs who you are now, but does not define it. I help clients identify their negative thinking patterns that have kept them stuck in their lives. Together we will generate new, rational alternatives that will help you gain perspective about the life you want to be living.

Times of chaos, confusion, and challenge are opportunities for a shift in perspective and meaningful, long-lasting change. We don't often have a choice about challenging circumstances but we do get to choose how we respond and whether or not we grow stronger from the experience! Using a blend of traditional "talk therapy" and alternative therapies (such as mindfulness, somatic awareness, and creative expression) we collaborate for my clients' restoration of their natural wellness in mind, body, and spirit. I can help you become your best self!

You are living a daily battle in your head about what you can eat, how much you should exercise, if you are worthy of taking up space. You are consumed by counting calories and by the negative voice inside that tells you, you’ll never be good enough or thin enough, smart enough or pretty enough. You are fed up with how the society/culture tells you how you should look and feel and behave. Your behaviors have you feeling exhausted and depleted and you wonder how you can go on another day. Others may think you have it all together on the outside, but the mental torture inside is killing you and feel like your life is shrinking.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
