I named my practice Capybara Counseling because I'm a mild weirdo, but more importantly I'm a clinician who shows up for my clients with unconditional
acceptance
of who they are now and who they want to become.
They say the only constant in life is change. But change is hard! We as humans tend to feel comfort in predictability and routine, and change (especially when sudden, unexpected, and/or tragic) inherently challenges us to sit with discomfort. Even deliberate and "happy" changes like starting a new career, getting married, journeying through gender transition, or beginning a sober lifestyle can still cause a myriad of complicated emotions as you adjust to your new life. Finding meaning in those changes while learning skills to manage the added stress is an empowering, healing, and worthwhile endeavor.

I strive to foster a safe, affirming and supportive therapeutic environment, and view therapy as a collaborative process in which the client is the expert. I am curious and observant, vulnerable and honest and I look forward to walking alongside you through your therapy journey. I encourage you to experiment with new behaviors that could help you embrace your thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them and begin to engage in your life through making choices that move you toward your values.

"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom," Viktor Frankl. Everything that life throws at us can be overwhelming. Having a person to talk to in a safe, non judgmental space is important for maintaining overall wellness. Making the decision to seek help is a huge step and very empowering, congratulations!

Therapy can be scary, but it can also be relieving, empowering and a beautiful
act
of self-love.
Hello and welcome! I specialize in working with women, college students, survivors of trauma, folks on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, and anyone facing stress around anxiety, depression, self-esteem, life transitions, boundary setting and relationship concerns. I specialize in working with ages 18-30. I value authenticity and transparency and believe the relationship in therapy is the key element to a powerful experience. We get more from therapy when we are open. Often, we are not getting our needs met out of fear or avoidance, and therapy is a great way to practice embodiment, taking space and being present as your authentic self.

I use research-based treatments, including
Acceptance
Commitment Therapy (
ACT
), which is a big part of my approach to therapy.
I am committed to helping children and adults overcome stress and anxiety and live their best lives. This includes coping with fear and panic, social anxiety, chronic worries, obsessive thinking, and compulsive habits. We all experience stress and distressing thoughts. It is easy to feel stuck and not know how to move forward. Therapy can help you express your feelings, give you strategies to cope with intense emotions, improve relationships, and reduce the hold anxiety has over you. I would love to walk through this process with you and/or your child.

I know you want to enjoy a rich and meaningful life. The problem is you have encountered an overwhelming storm which makes you feel lost and alone. I believe that it is just plain wrong for anyone to feel like there is no hope for them to heal and thrive again. I feel your pain and understand your frustration. That’s why I became a licensed professional counselor in 2014. Here's what a plan forward would look like: First, schedule your first appointment. You will feel heard and learn new tools that work. Two, together we will create a personalized plan for your progress. Three, you will get results as practice your new skills.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
