You may find yourself wondering if this is how it is “supposed” to feel. Being pregnant or having a new baby is hard, so this is normal, right? You find yourself putting on a mask, declaring that everything is great when that really isn’t your experience. The message is everywhere that you are supposed to be your happiest and embracing every moment of this time, and guilt creeps in when that isn’t your reality. The worry, the struggle to be present. I see you. Your day is full of comparison traps making you wonder if you are good enough, doing enough. You may struggle to ask for help, and when you try you don’t know what to ask for.

Do you have a history of neglect, abuse, or trauma that's making your life unlivable? Have traditional therapies left you feeling worse? If you have overwhelming symptoms (e.g., panic, anxiety, depression, self-hatred, dissociation, or suicidality) and intense diagnoses (PTSD, CPTSD, DID, or BPD) and past therapy hasn't helped, I offer a radical new take. It helps address the root causes of your struggles, not just treat the symptoms. It involves deeper, richer work that offers real and lasting change.

I am open to working with individuals who have experienced expanded or non-ordinary states of consciousness who may be looking for a safe space to share these experiences and integrate them into their lives in a meaningful way. Choosing to invest your time, energy, and resources in therapy takes courage and commitment. Is there a part of you that is excited by the idea of making meaningful changes in your life? While another part of you is fearful? Embarking on this journey can be exciting and sometimes scary.

Extremes in our emotional and psychological states can lead to imbalance, avoidance and mindlessness, and can be related to extremes in other areas of our health, such as eating, activity, and sleep. Eating too much or not fueling our bodies enough, stress or emotional eating-these are ways we cope with or respond to extremes in our thoughts and emotions, and distracts and disonnects us from our life values and goals. I am here to help you reestablish your values and goals by focusing on a more balanced perspective and awareness of your mind, body and behaviors.

Do you struggle with anxiety, panic, perfectionism, burnout, and a general sense of not being enough? Sometimes that looks like overworking, drowning in motherhood, or not being able to pin down exactly what doesn’t feel good in your life – just knowing that something is off. My deepest passion is helping women begin taking up space in their own life; typically that looks like a good balance of practicing new skills (setting boundaries, self-connection, communication, self-care, etc) while also exploring and healing deeply-held beliefs that make it difficult to do those skills on your own.

I am Carrie Kroner, a licensed supervising professional clinical counselor. I work with children, adolescents, and adults to learn the skills they need to manage symptoms of anxiety and depression on their own. I truly enjoy guiding others and helping them to grow into the best version of themselves. I use my expertise and experience to tailor our time together to individual needs, whether that means getting on the floor to play a game to help a child feel comfortable, guiding families through productive conversation, or meeting with an individual to let them vent and gently pushing them toward productive discussion.

If you are the type of person who runs toward the chaos, you may find it difficult to relate to others who haven't shared that experience. I specialize in disaster mental health and vicarious trauma, especially in those who care for others. As a therapist, I take a primarily reality-based, humanistic approach, incorporating a love for humor, gaming, and nature into mindfulness-based stress reduction and self-exploration. My goal is to take the shame and stigma out of the practice of self-care by making it practical and applicable to YOU.

As a former Ohio State wrestler, one of my greatest passions is in Sports Counseling - helping athletes and families reach their potential where anger, negative self talk and fear can often times speak so loudly. I help others realize they can silence those voices and take ownership of their actions and emotions so sports, relationships and life can be fun!

Perhaps you are just wanting to feel better and know there are things from your past that are holding you back. My ideal client is prepared to initiate changes in their life to promote wellness. They are prepared to process internal and external contributors to their mood, discuss options for improvement, and practice healthier skills that will assist in achieving their personal goals. My ideal client is internally motivated and desires emotional balance from concerns such as anxiety, depression, impaired self-esteem, trauma, and interpersonal conflict. They arrive to treatment with goals in mind, and will actively work to experience relief of distressing symptoms.

My ideal client is motivated to roll up their sleeves and engage in the therapeutic process. They are able to hold an open mind and practice effective coping skills to improve their overall functioning and quality of life. They can challenge themselves to be vulnerable and practice accountability while processing their problematic thinking patterns and behaviors in a safe and non-judgmental environment. They wish to engage in therapy because they realize that they need to make a change and are willing to take a leap of faith to make it happen.

I'm not sure I have an ideal client. I believe in meeting a person where they are and moving forward from there. I feel people often come to therapy to help find the best version of themselves. I enjoy helping others find solutions to their problems, helping them identify their strengths, and deciding how to improve their weaknesses.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Northwest Columbus, Columbus?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
