I can help you understand and manage your child's behavior, explore ways to feel more emotionally connected with them, and improve your relationship. Let me help you connect with your child so that you can build and strengthen your relationship in order to work through any challenges you might be facing.

I also am trained in Child Centered
Play Therapy
, allowing clients to heal through
play
.
My heart lights up by helping children, age 13 and under. It is so important that children have a solid foundation. Not every child is lucky enough to have a smooth ride. That's where I come in. Children, just like adults, want to be heard and understood. Except they often need the ability to
play
to tell their story. I give them that place to
play
, heal and grow stronger.

With children, I use child centered
play
and attachment; I especially like to work closely with parents of young children (4-7) to support their children's regulation skills.
Hello! I'm Kelsey, a neurodivergent therapist working out of Madisonville. I'm excited about helping people create a safe space to heal from the harm that comes from living in a broken, disconnected society. I borrow heavily from my systems-focused disability advocacy background, as well as my background in biology and trauma informed care, to provide therapy that dances between what needs to shift in your brain and in you environment. When doing therapy with me, special interests are welcomed, your history and background is valued, and support needs are accommodated. I often use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as a framework.

Using a combination of behavioral, cognitive, and
play therapy
techniques, in conjunction with creative interventions, I will assist your child in developing coping skills and aim to improve their ability to more freely express themselves.
Life is full of experiences that shape us in a variety of ways. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and consumed by the challenges and constant changes thrown our way. My passion is for helping children and families learn to appreciate their inner strengths and grow in confidence to face adversity head on. I believe that learning to express, manage and process emotions appropriately is a vital life skill, one that requires teaching. If you find your child has difficulty expressing or managing "big emotions", is often anxious or depressed, struggles with social skills or simply needs an unbiased ear to listen to, allow me to help.

I have extensive training in human development, brain development, stress, trauma treatment modalities (TFCBT, EMDR, ISST, CFTSI), and
play therapy
, but, at the end of the day, the therapeutic relationship is the key factor in determining success through therapy.
I work with kids and adult women. If you have a kid who has experienced something stressful – abuse, neglect, divorce, medical ailments, multiple moves, etc. – and is anxious, angry, sad, distrustful, clingy and more, I will work with your child and you to effectively deal with what has happened and decrease problematic behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. If you are an adult woman who has mild stress for whatever reason and you either want to alleviate that stress or just want someone outside your personal world to talk with, I will work with you to meet your goal.

As a
Play
Therapist, I strongly believe in the therapeutic powers of
play
.
Each individual has their own story outside of their challenges and struggles. We are taught so much if we just slow down and experience someone else's worldview. Children especially, need someone to accept them as they are and help them flourish socially and emotionally. This is the core of my practice; to celebrate each unique individual and help them become better versions of themselves. While I am most passionate about helping young children, I also have experience working with anxiety, depression, PTSD, behavioral and/or emotional concerns, social skills development, attention difficulties, grief and loss, children and families

In addition to treating adults, I also provide
Play Therapy
to children ages 6 and up.
I view psychotherapy as a process rather than an attempt to “fix” the person. Within that process, I strive to create a non-judgmental, compassionate, and responsive therapeutic environment that promotes exploration, reflection, and insight. Through creating an atmosphere that balances warmth and challenge, I encourage people to face and overcome their distress, as opposed to adopting coping strategies which often perpetuate feelings of being stuck. Through this process of discovery, life becomes more satisfying when you gain more influence over how you experience yourself, others, and the world.

I consider myself a specialist who uses
play therapy
with children and exploration of family dynamics/early childhood experiences with adolescents and adults to tackle the many challenges of life.
I work with children, adolescents, and adults on a variety of issues. I am an Adlerian therapist, which means I see value in belonging and meaning-making. I also integrate neuroscience while building relationships with my clients. This is especially useful when helping clients work through developmental issues, trauma, and grief. Situations and experiences do not define us. Instead, with insight and support, we have the opportunity to define who we are and what we might contribute to the world. I have also studied appropriate techniques for incorporating spirituality as a source of hope and connectedness to culture and community.

Who is play therapy for?
Play therapy is generally targeted to children between the ages of 3 and 11 who have social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Play therapy has also been found helpful for children who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or witnessed atrocities. Play therapy is also often recommended for children who are undergoing major medical procedures or who are suffering from chronic illness; many children’s hospitals are equipped to offer play therapy on-site. Play therapy is also sometimes used for adults; creative writing, music, and art are expressive forms that can all be adapted for therapeutic purposes.
Why do people need play therapy?
Children often do not have the language skills or words to know or to express what is troubling them. Yet they often spontaneously draw or use playthings to depict scenarios that reflect problems in their everyday life. Play therapy provides children with an array of objects and play situations to act out their feelings or experiences so that therapists can get a clear picture of what children might be struggling with and help them find solutions. In addition, play therapists are skilled at helping children understand their inner experience and find words for them, necessary steps toward helping children learn to control their own behavior and come up with solutions to problems they encounter.
What happens in play therapy?
A child enters a comfortable playroom where they are free to choose the objects they want to play with. The play therapist will typically observe how they play with the toys—whether a sandbox, puppets, dolls and action figures, trucks, costumes, drawing and painting materials, or more—because such play provides clues to a child’s family and social relationships, difficulties they are encountering in the world, and what going on inside themselves. Sometimes the therapist may ask the child to use the play objects to tell a story about their family. Using the same instruments of play, therapists can help children discover more advantageous ways of thinking and behaving.
What kinds of problems do play therapists treat?
Play therapy can help children who display destructive or self-destructive impulses; children who seem angry, sad, or fearful; children who experience frequent social, emotional, family, or school difficulty. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, who are regularly exposed to family conflict, or who have been physically or emotionally abused. Play therapy can help children who are perpetrators of bullying as well as those who are targets of bullying. It helps children learn to identify their feelings, to express them in constructive ways, and to regulate them so they can get on with the business of development.
How long does play therapy last?
Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and they usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Each session is tailored to the individual child and the kinds of problems they are struggling with. Play that is highly repetitive often indicates a problem requiring further exploration. Therapists typically measure progress through session-to-session changes in play behavior.
