People seek therapy because they simply want to feel better. But what does “feeling better” really mean? Talk‑therapy can give us insight, yet insight alone doesn’t always bring relief. Somatic therapy bridges that gap by uniting mind and body. Rather than asking “what happened?” or “how does that make you feel?” I might explore, “When you notice joy, what sensations arise in your body?” Moving the conversation from the head to the felt experience opens new pathways for change and healing.

I was a professional airplane and helicopter pilot (civilian) before transitioning to a career as a therapist. I flew and worked with many veterans and learned about their struggles after deployment and separating from the military. Some of these challenges were reuniting with family, feelings of isolation, loss of purpose and meaning and moral injury. I also learned about veterans’ resilience as they faced these challenges. Working as a team, I can help navigate your transition to civilian life by improving your ability to cope with difficult emotions and thoughts using various types of therapy tailored for you and your goals.

I have been working with teens, children, families and adults since 1988. I believe in warmly supporting my clients through the struggles and traumas of life. I use a variety of theoretical approaches, as therapy is not a one size fits all medium. I have worked in In-Patient settings as well as Out-Patient settings. My goal for my clients is that I am able to provide them with a safe and supportive environment where together we can explore their hopes, needs, and possibilities so they are able to move forward towards a better, kinder and gentler path in life.

Feeling frozen or overwhelmed and it’s getting more difficult to ‘push through’ every day? Have you been feeling less connected to others in your life? I’ve worked with many people who are looking to make change, find motivation and explore ways to reconnect with who they are. I have helped people suffering from anxiety, depression and trauma who believe they aren’t enough, or have been putting their energy into helping others for so long they aren’t sure of who they are now. And I have worked with those looking to discover their full sense of self, understand who they are and discover what’s valuable and meaningful in their lives.

You don't feel like you are enough. In fact, sometimes you think if you were just a different person, things would be better. Confidence is fleeting. You feel uncomfortable in your own skin, feel stuck, lonely and often hopeless. Your thoughts are often plagued by what others think of you and you are riddled with guilt for what feels like just about everything. You feel like that relationship you have been longing for is elusive. Everyone else seems to have what you've been longing for. There must surely be something wrong with you.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
