People are hostages of their unremembered past - past attachments, traumas, deprivations and coping strategies. Many of these strategies were necessary for survival and adaptation in the past, but later they became useless. When later in life the unremembered past is repeated, it limits a person's freedom, creativity and happiness. One usually needs help with understanding and undoing these old, repetitive and often ineffective strategies aimed at dealing with anxiety and life.

James R. Polzner is an LISW in the State of Ohio. He has 38 years of experience providing mental health care throughout Northeast Ohio. He began his career in the Psychiatric Emergency Room at St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland. He then became the Emergency Services Program Director for the Mental Health system in Medina County, where he worked for 15 years. He served as Director of Social Work at Windsor Hospital in Chagrin Falls. He later provided out-patient therapy at Psychological Behavioral Consultants in North Olmsted and is currently an out-patient therapist at Lifestance Health in Beachwood.

Most of my patients come to me feeling a significant level of distress. Some may have seen a mental health professional before and have some idea of what to expect. However, for many this may be the first time they have ever met with a mental health professional and they may feel apprehensive about the process. My goal in that initial session is to strike a balance between putting the person at ease while gathering important information about who they are and what their situation is. Most patients return to their second session feeling encouraged and a degree of hope based on that initial encounter.

In my 30 years of experience as a child and adult clinical psychologist, I have developed a diverse set of assessment and therapeutic skills, allowing me to provide optimal care to children, adults and families. I am a member of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), and my specialties include helping families going through the difficulties of divorce, parent coordination, preserving a cooperative and collaborative environment to keep the children's best interests a priority, and conducting court-ordered custody evaluations. Attorneys and courts frequently request these services in order to help resolve child custody and parenting disputes.

Navigating through this life can become difficult and because we are human, we are vulnerable and face challenges. As a licensed therapist, I have successfully aided clients in managing difficulties utilizing evidenced-based practices, implementing a holistic approach, while analyzing the big picture. My experience working in various levels of care and with different populations has afforded me a wealth of training in areas such as depression, anxiety, severe mental illness, trauma, substance abuse, social adaptability, dual diagnosis, gambling, and a variety of other life altering deficiencies.

The therapeutic relationship creates a unique space for patient and therapist to explore and uncover new possibilities for growth and change in areas that are of importance to the patient. I work collaboratively with patients to dislodge and free up deeply-embedded patterns of behavior and ways of relating to others that can keep us stuck and prevent us from moving forward, from achieving important goals, and from developing satisfying relationships that are nurturing and sustaining. Relationships are central to my work with patients, whether working individually, in couples therapy, or in a group.

Originally from NYC, have always had friends, associates, relationships with persons from every culture.  This has been extremely valuable in developing my clinical skills and ability to understand and help a wide variety of people from various backgrounds.  The next invaluable contribution to my clinical skills is my Mother, Elizabeth, who taught me, "Everyone I know knows something I don't."  This makes every single person of unique intrinsic value.

Megan is experienced in working with adults experiencing severe mental health concerns, mood disorders, personality disorders, and trauma. She has extensive knowledge on trauma, trauma responses and the neurobiology of trauma, and has facilitated both individual and group counseling for individuals with these concerns. As a queer practitioner, Megan has experience leading both individual and group counseling for LGBTQIA+ populations who may be experiencing concerns related to identity. Megan is aligned and open to working with non-monogamous and alternative relationship styles and orientations.

Michael Tesler received his master's degree in counseling and his bachelor's degree in psychology from Cleveland State University. His previous experience includes providing counseling to school-aged children and their families. He has also served as a program manager for patients with dual diagnoses and for community members in need of housing placement. He provides individual counseling for adults ages 18-64. His treatment specialties include addiction, Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder,depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It is my feeling that all people have an innate need to succeed in life and to discover and better understand their human potential and purpose. It is also my feeling that growth occurs when we look inward. Through thoughtful introspection, the human spirit has the opportunity to evolve and actualize in both our conscious and unconscious lives.

At Psychology Partners of Ohio we conduct comprehensive Forensic Evaluations for juveniles and adults referred by attorneys, courts, government agencies, private sector businesses, and self-referrals. We provide direct feedback to the referring party and render thorough forensic reports including responses to specific referral questions, diagnostic determinations, and treatment recommendations. I have more than 10 years of experience working in the mental health field. My experience in the field includes research, private practice, community service, publication, professional presentation nationally and internationally, academic instruction, and mentoring.
