Hello - my name is Mary Van Hooser. I am an older therapist with lots of experience working with a wide variety of mental health struggles. I am easy to engage with, like to listen and enjoy helping you explore and process the concerns you're having in a non-judgmental manner. I am a wife, mother of grown children and have young grandchildren. I have lots of siblings, one having a chronic mental illness that has made me particularly non-judgmental and understanding of the impact this has on families. I admire those who reach out for help and see them as taking a huge step which takes courage.

Maybe you're just exhausted, anxious, and ready for something to shift.
My work is trauma-informed, queer-affirming, and grounded in both clinical training and lived experience. I'm someone who genuinely enjoys sitting in the discomfort with people, creating the kind of space where maybe no one else has been willing to sit with them before. We'll move at your pace, build safety first, and then get into the patterns underneath.

I have found Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helpful for individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and other common mental health issues.
Welcome. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Life can be a lot, and being human is a lot. Take a deep breath; you have already made the first step towards improving your mental health. My name is Annie, and I look forward to meeting you where you are and walking alongside you on your journey. I often hear from clients as they begin the work of counseling that they need to learn coping strategies. Usually, we already have coping strategies; it's just that they are no longer working, getting in the way, or making things worse. Learning new skills can help you be intentional rather than just reacting to whatever life throws at you.

I specialize in helping people who feel stuck in cycles of anxiety and depression, or who feel stuck in the lingering effects of past trauma find their way back to peace, purpose, and connection.
My work draws from evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing, but I always tailor sessions to your unique needs and pace. Healing isn’t one-size-fits-all, and I want you to feel supported every step of the way.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
