Over the years I have developed competencies in working with adults struggling with chronic mental health problems, including depression and anxiety, with individuals dealing with the emotional impact of and having to adjust to needed lifestyle changes.
I view counseling as a problem-solving process where we work initially on finding ways to help you feel you are no longer drowning emotionally, then begin a process of improving your awareness of the negative patterns of behavior in your life, and the thoughts and emotions that perpetuate those negative cycles. Once you feel more like you are on solid ground, we work to help you become more aware of the decision points when you can choose to stop from repeating old maladaptive behaviors and begin to develop new more positive behaviors which can help you find a path to a life with which you can be more satisfied.

As a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor specializing in Mental Health Counseling to strengthen relationships in children, teens, and adults with ADHD, anxiety, depression, and behavioral difficulties, I have been providing clients with the means to express their concerns through Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused Therapy (TFCBT), Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Person-Centered Therapy.
Why see a therapist? A child may have difficulty using problem-solving skills. Often children experience low self-esteem or lack self-confidence. Some children may need assistance managing stress or anger. Children and teens may have difficulty getting along in school and at home. We are actively searching for a licensed therapist who share our passion.

Is your child becoming more depressed, anxious or defiant, spending way too much time on devices?
I will work with you to explore thoughts, feelings, and problems on a more internal and psychological level which I believe has a longer lasting impact while still clearing up the more overt behaviors. I use an eclectic style that includes psychodymamics, cognitive-behavioral therapy, self-empowerment techniques, meditation and mindfulness.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
