In my career, I have provided mental and drug counseling services to address those in need of counseling. I have worked with individuals and families dealing with anxiety, depression, anger issues, family conflict, trauma, drug abuse, physical and sexual trauma along with behavioral development. I have worked with children, adolescents and adults along with families who have experienced these issues. I believe it is important to work together to address changes in the patient and families, if needed, to create a positive outcome so the patient and their family can live a healthier and fulfilling life.

My practice is based on the premise that the relationship is key to emotional wellbeing. Life experiences and especially trauma can lead us to distort our interpretations of both our internal and external worlds. My counseling experience began in 2007 working with young people with extensive social, emotional, and behavioral needs. This inevitably raised my awareness of the importance of the family and related support systems. I spent much of my life as a professional musician and have been able to use music in my therapeutic work, supporting the development and maintenance of sharing, self-regulation, and effective communication.

Please see my website for the most up-to-date information. I utilize strengths-based therapies to work with my clients to create customized sessions that build coping skills and replace maladaptive behaviors. I am mindful of the “person-in-environment” perspective, which acknowledges that each client and situation is different and shaped by environmental context. I like to meet the client where they are mentally and emotionally and work from that spot, understanding that growth is not always a linear process.

There are many reasons why someone might want to seek out counseling; maybe it's the desire to feel less depressed or anxious, to be more connected or understood, or to learn better communication skills in relationship to others. More often than not, the reason a person reaches out to a therapist is because something is out of balance or 'off'. I believe that people have an inherent desire to feel good and that we do the best we can until we learn better ways.

I have been in private practice in Hardwick, VT since 2003. I use a psychodynamic approach. Psychodynamic therapy views the therapeutic relationship as a mirror of patients' difficulties in relation to others and, on a deeper level, of patients' earlier relations to their parents. This type of therapy is valuable for anyone but especially for people who are curious, who have the capacity for insight, and who are passionate for self-development. Common presenting issues are depression, anxiety, family of origin conflict, relationship problems (for example, divorce, separation), history of abuse/neglect, and obsessive and/or compulsive behaviors.

Living with addiction and cooccurring disorders can be very disruptive. Addiction can lead to making poor choices resulting in relationship difficulties, legal issues and health concerns. Most people simply want the chaos to stop and to find stability in their lives. I believe that everyone deserves a second chance and work with each individual to develop an unique approach to develop the stability that has been illusive. I have a person centered approach and will employ a combination of methods that best match your needs.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
