I use evidence-based practices, such as CBT and ERP, to help you understand your anxiety and/or OCD and learn how to manage it more effectively.
Are you drowning in a sea of anxious "what ifs"? Is fear holding you back from connecting with the joy in your life? If so, you're not alone. Unmanaged anxiety and OCD can be incredibly painful. But there is hope. By learning to manage the thoughts and behaviors that perpetuate this pain, you can break free and experience true freedom. Freedom to live a life that's more present and fulfilling, where you can make choices based on what you want, not what you fear.

In addition to standard therapy, I specialize in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard treatment for OCD.
I believe that the most effective way to heal old wounds and develop new strengths is in relationship to other people, and have faith in the potential for the therapeutic relationship to be a vehicle for deep insight and transformation. I work with adults and adolescents with anxiety disorders, who are processing trauma, who are facing major life transitions or who simply want to explore their full potential.

I treat clients with anxiety-based disorders, ranging from OCD or panic disorders to generalized anxiety. Additionally, general life stressors, such as client's enrolled in college, is an area that I feel competent in and passionate about. An ideal client would be aware of their challenges and motivated to do the work that therapy often requires. I enjoy working with clients who have goals of increasing their overall life satisfaction, whether through learning skills such as self-regulation techniques or goals of learning about symptoms to reduce these symptoms and increase overall life satisfaction.

THE ONLY WAY OUT IS THROUGH (Robert Frost)... It is human to suffer and it is human to face challenges. When the suffering becomes too great, and the challenges too large, good therapy can play a key role in bringing about change. If you decide to work with me, I would consider it an honor to become part of your journey towards increased health and well-being. When you come to therapy, you will be treated with respect. I bring many years of experience as a therapist, providing both brief evidence-based interventions and long term psychodynamic approach. I will work carefully with you to define and achieve your personal goals.

Covid-19: Meet by Zoom or in person. For over 30 years, I have offered attentive and thoughtful psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in a comfortable home office with a private waiting area. My style has been described as welcoming, engaging, flexible and "serious yet playful". I work with a wide range of problems: work and relationships struggles, depression, anxiety, insomnia, alcohol abuse, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, personality disorders and many other matters people bring up. I am slow to recommend medication, but work in concert with a number of psychiatrists should either of us believe medication might be beneficial.

I utilize neuroscience and CBT to target and work on the symptoms of anxiety, phobias, and OCD.
Do you struggle with feeling overwhelmed trying to keep up with a full schedule? Do you feel like the intensity of emotions can be a burden? Maybe it feels difficult to keep up with work, health, and relationships that are important to you. Do you struggle with feeling an abrupt surge of fear that seems hard to predict? Perhaps it is easy to predict and hard to control. Experiencing doubt and uncertainty about the future can be difficult. Worrying about decisions that need to be made can leave you feeling stuck.

Currently I'm focusing on taking new clients who meet any or all of the following descriptors: clients who are queer & trans, have OCD & are looking for ERP, polyamorous/non-monogamous clients, working on attachment.
The strength and quality of the therapist-client relationship can predict success in therapy. So, it's important that you find a therapist who makes you feel like coming to therapy is equal parts challenge and safety. I have rejected aspects of traditional ideas of professionalism (for example: you can't have tattoos and still be professional, being a therapist with political beliefs in unprofessional), while retaining the aspects of professionalism that contribute to therapeutic success (for example: having good boundaries, ensuring confidentiality, using well-informed techniques).

Through my personal and professional life experience I have been fortunate enough to support members of the LGBTQIA+ Community. A community I continue to learn how to navigate personally. I aim to create an affirming space for folx in search of identity exploration, building a chosen family, and learning “where to go next?” I have grown my network of support in Philadelphia to provide the best referral source for those in search of gender affirming healthcare and organizations. Also, I am Certified in EXRP through CBI to support alleviation in distress with OCD. I receive consultation through Rogers and CBI.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
