I work with people who are interested in improving their relationships with one another. Therapy is a place where partners can learn how to disrupt old patterns and start experiencing the pleasure of interacting in new ways. The work involves talking, examining the obstacles to talking, and using what happens in sessions as a way to understand what goes on outside of therapy. It also involves bringing creativity to the problems at hand and trying things differently.

I support people dealing with depression, anxiety, relational distress, life transitions, gender and sexuality exploration, chronic illness, autism and/or ADHD. Healthy relationships with our family, friends, and support systems including therapy inform our ability to cope, process, and grow. I believe healing happens when we develop self-compassion for our most shamed parts and build support systems that meet us with care and understanding. My style is integrative, mindful and rooted in social justice.

Today's life struggles are much different than yesterdays. On top of average everyday obstacles of navigating a busy life, raising a family, and making ends meet, were faced with political tensions, health concerns, and morals/values that we've never thought of before. Amongst all these stressors, I relate and empathize with this journey were on together. I enjoy helping today's transition-aged youth (late teen to early adult) learn to slow down in the midst of society's business, learn to enjoy this journey, find meaning in their experiences and find their way through life's difficulties, relationships and career paths.

Looking to make meaningful changes in your life or make sense of difficult past experiences? In my practice, I work to help my clients acquire the tools needed to realize their personal potential and live more satisfying lives. My areas of expertise include anxiety, trauma, and OCD. I primarily use cognitive behavioral and mindfulness-based approaches to therapy but draw from a range of techniques to meet the needs and strengths of each client. Sessions typically involve helping clients to gain insight into thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, explore alternative ways of viewing situations, and modify unhelpful behavior.

You did it. You took the time to look for a therapist, which can be one of the most difficult parts of this process. Especially when you are wading through countless profiles looking for someone to trust, who will listen, and hopefully connect with. So now you have found me and might be wondering what's next.

You don't have to suffer alone. There is help. We can work together so that you experience a more fulfilled life. I work with clients on issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, spiritual issues, and loss and grief. I can also help clients struggling with trauma, ADHD, and sleep difficulties. Primarily I use a psychodynamic perspective, appreciating the underlying causes to the difficulties we face. I also integrate techniques from other approaches, such as gestalt, emotion-focused therapy, short-term psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral therapy, depending on the client's unique problems and goals.

Hi, my name is Hillary Williams. If you are someone dealing with issues relating to trauma, grief, loss, childhood abuse and/or perinatal mood or anxiety disorders and you are seeking support and empowerment in your life, you would be a great fit for my practice. So many of us carry around false narratives about who we are based on unfortunate experiences that happened to us which left us feeling alone, empty, or lost. This limits our vision of who we can become and may cause us to rely on unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with life's triggers.

A person who is struggling is not broken. You are not a machine in need of repair, but are instead a complicated and complex beings surviving in a just as complicated and complex world. Thus, I hope to support you through your own self-discovery with radical level of love, acceptance, and compassion so you can model that same love, acceptance, and self-compassion within. I aim to provide a warm, inviting, and brave space to share without fear of judgment.

I utilize an eclectic, psychoanalytic, and relational approach while employing a strong racial justice, feminist, and queer theory lens. I practice from a fat-lib, sex-positive, and intersectional feminist perspective. I believe that one's past informs how they interact with and experience the world. Healing takes place as one fosters empathy and consideration for their past and present selves. The therapeutic relationship allows for gaining deeper perspective and understanding of oneself. I strive to build genuine and earnest rapport with my clients by being deeply nonjudgmental and always practicing with respect.

As a dedicated counselor, I envision my ideal clients as individuals who are not merely in search of healing but also aspire to personal growth. These could be individuals or families, particularly those of color, who have weathered various forms of trauma or injustices. The issues they grapple with might span a spectrum from anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem to the aftermath of enduring abuse or addiction. These individuals seek a sanctuary, a place where they can freely express their emotions, analyze their experiences, and most importantly, lay the groundwork for a journey towards holistic healing.

Therapy is a partnership of trust; a safe place to give voice, transform experience and practice new ways of being. What is dark and daunting to do alone becomes possible with guidance and presence. Positive self-care and higher self-trust are key to feeling calmer and energized to make decisions and act in alignment with our authentic self. I support clients to gain insight into self-defeating thoughts and patterns, and learn new tools to cope with hardship with renewed confidence and balance. Clients with intense feelings, burnout and a harsh inner critic learn to relate to themselves and others with more compassion and ease.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
