I have a deep understanding of anxiety, as well as OCD and the gold-standard treatment, Exposure and Response Prevention.
Limited availability- Morning appointments only! I specialize in, and am passionate about, treating a range of anxiety disorders, as well as adjustment issues and trauma. If you struggle with anxiety or OCD, you may have fears that persist no matter what you try. Or you may feel stuck in patterns that you cannot control, or unable to stop certain behaviors even though some part of you desperately wants to stop. And while I cannot promise to erase the thoughts you are having, I can help you to change your relationship with them and reduce their ability to make your life difficult. There is hope.

I often treat anxiety, depression, and OCD.
I am a psychoanalytic and existential psychologist. I am best suited to working with people who are motivated to question themselves, highly open to exploration, and willing to tolerate ambiguity and forego ready-made advice. If you feel ready to do the "deep" work that you may have avoided in therapy before, we may be a good match. Please see my website at www.michaelmillerphd.com for more information.

I specialize in working with children and adolescents experiencing disruptive behaviors, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, OCD, tics/Tourette's Disorder, ADHD, and high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders.
My patients are interested in evidence-based approaches to address problems and to reach goals. In some cases--especially with kids--there are questions regarding a specific diagnosis (e.g., Autism). Patients choose to work with me so that they can have an experienced professional help them implement effective strategies. Parents who work with me are interested in learning additional approaches to help their child, whether addressing anxiety, mood, or disruptive behaviors. I team up with and collaborate with patients/parents, because when we work together, we can achieve meaningful change!

My passion is treating severe OCD and anxiety. My clients joke that I am "not a talk therapist, but a 'do' therapist," as sessions are often very active and skills focused. I view therapy as a supportive environment where I can help clients face their fears. I only provide evidence-based treatments (methods proven by research to be more effective than general talk therapy), as my goal is to help people get results as soon as possible.

When a person is struggling, I look at the big picture, not just "problems" or "symptoms." Through a strengths-based perspective, I try to see how the problem areas came to be, formulate a plan to address concerns, and actively teach skills to foster change. Through this lens, I have successfully worked with kids (as young as 5), teens, and young adults to address depression, anxiety, self-harm, OCD, ADHD, and other behavioral and emotional disturbances.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
