The focus of therapy is to identify early life influences and/or learned behaviors that lead to problem behaviors. Behaviors can include: anger, physical/emotional/sexual abuse. In addition family/relationship conflict, anxiety/depression, mood swings, drug & alcohol & compulsive behaviors. The sub conscious mind is programed from infancy with positive & negative beliefs & destructive coping skills, programmed survival skills. In therapy we identify old habits/behaviors & poor coping strategies. In therapy, we work to replace self destructive habits/behaviors with functional habits & beliefs. Anxiety & Depression are relieved.

The treatments I use help people to identify goals closest to their own values. Goals are then easier to achieve because they are already close to who you are and what you hold to be important. I can assist with reshaping challenging thoughts into productive actions and more positive behaviors. I work in a group practice in Lewiston founded as a diverse holistic group that with the pandemic has evolved into a practice of experienced mental health practictioners.

Welcome! Sometimes we need support navigating tough times, processing past experiences or unpacking life stressors. Our thoughts alone can be extremely overwhelming at times. My therapeutic approach is genuine, interactive, direct, and easy-going with a mix of humor.

For the past 35 years I have worked in the field of counseling, education, and in the field of disability. It has been my fervent hope to find a therapeutic approach to neurological problems. When I encountered The field of brain training, also called neurofeedback, I knew I had found my life work. Since 2009 I have been providing a natural and non-invasive treatment for conditions that cover the gamut. ADD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, seizure disorder, brain injury, trauma, accident, stroke, developmental differences, sleep disorder, headache, chronic fatigue, and tics as well as OCD.

What is holding you back from living the life you want? OCD? Panic? Social Anxiety? How would you act if fear, shame and distress didn't have such power over you? We can learn to change how we relate and interact with our internal world and decrease the power our thoughts and emotions have on us. I am passionate about helping my clients learn to manage internal and external barriers effectively and regain a sense of wellness and value in their life. Motivation is crucial in treatment, but successful therapy starts with a good relationship between the therapist and the client.

To treat OCD, I use Inference-based Therapy (IBT or I-CBT), an evidence-based treatment for OCD that is gentler but as effective as doing exposures (ERP).
I received my BA with Honors from Brown University and my master’s from Boston College. I acquired my clinical training at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School’s largest psychiatric affiliate, in the division of Anxiety & Mood Disorders. I also trained at the OCD Institute, the nation’s first and foremost treatment center for obsessive-compulsive disorder. I help adults with anxiety and OCD move past the “what if's” and live life with confidence and trust. Most of my clients have OCD themes that center on identity, sexuality, morality, relationships, and harm (“Pure O”). I also treat couples struggling with communication issues.

I am an Art Therapist and am formally trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Did you ever watch Boy Meets World growing up? If yes, skip the next two sentences. If no, then let me set the scene. A 90’s sitcom about the wholesome, suburban Philadelphia Matthews family, who have two teenage sons. The older brother, Eric, bonks his younger brother, Cory, in the forehead and says “Life’s tough, get a helmet.” While I don’t condone violence, I do agree that life can be tough sometimes. While wearing a helmet is beneficial in a lot of scenarios (i.e. riding a bike), it is not so beneficial in the emotional, social, psychological, or theoretical realms.

I practice CBT (includes ERP, CPT, ACT, DBT) to treat OCD and Related Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders, Somatic Symptom Disorders, and I provide group therapy for OCD.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist serving residents of California and Maine. Due to the barriers people often face while seeking help, my hope is to make the process a little easier by offering a secure space to participate in therapy from the privacy of your own home via Telehealth. I offer evidence-based care for people who may struggle to find help due to geographic location, impact of mental health on daily functioning, etc. Working collaboratively with each person is something I strongly prioritize throughout the treatment process, while also striving to empower people to make effective, long-lasting changes in their lives.

I utilize a variety of approaches based on patient needs, including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, exposure-based interventions, solution-focused approaches and trauma-informed treatment. Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
