Trying to manage OCD by yourself is no longer working, but there is hope on the horizon.
Obsessing again? You try to not think about the obsession, yet you are doing it again. It’s exhausting to live like this. You try so hard to fight against your obsession and compulsions, but it’s impossible. Every moment you don’t give in feels like torture, and there’s only one way to get relief. Your friends and family don’t understand what you’re going through. How could you possibly explain your routine of intricately choreographed quirks or disturbing thoughts to someone when you don’t really get why you’re doing it yourself? You feel helpless to make any change.

Throughout our journey in life, we frequently come across emotional and behavioral hurdles. These obstacles not only affect us individually but can also have repercussions on our family, work, and overall life dynamics. Various factors contribute to the development of emotional and psychological difficulties. These include conditions such as anxiety and mood disorders, struggles with anger, depression, issues with adapting to new situations, and the mounting pressures we face. The exciting part is that there exists a wealth of evidence-based techniques and approaches to help us conquer these obstacles and flourish.

I work in a way that emphasizes a deep understanding of oneself. Therapy is a place that gives you the freedom to think and feel. Your thoughts and feelings will be explored in a safe and empathetic manner. You will gain a greater understanding of your inner self and the filters through which you perceive people around you and the world. You will also comprehend why you think and act the way you do. Maladaptive patterns will be identified; change can then occur. I've been in practice with adults, couples, adolescents, and children as a registered mental health intern.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
