I see clients with problems such as generalized anxiety, OCD, panic, PTSD and social anxiety. I work from a positive psychology, strength-based perspective and primarily practice cognitive-behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, and narrative therapy. People often come to therapy because their symptoms increased after experiencing a stressor, such as relationship, career or family problems. In addition to individual therapy I also offer relaxation workshops. Visit drbethgiurelli.com for more information.

I treat Anxiety Disorders, Depressive Disorders, OCD, Self-esteem issues, work related issues and Relationship problems.
I believe every individual is unique and thus very individual's problems/issues/concerns are unique to them. Everyone has their own story. My approach is to treat the individual, not the diagnosis, but the individual with the diagnosis. I have learned over the past 25 years that the therapeutic relationship is key to developing trust and foster progress. *In addition to treating a range of mental disorders, I have training and experience treating people of all ages with Tourette's Syndrome. I am trained in CBIT (Comprehensive Behavioral Interventions for Tics)*

In addition to DBT, I employ specialized CBT treatments like Response Prevention and Exposure therapy (RPE) to target OCD, Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), DBT-PE, and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for trauma, and exposure for phobias.
Hello and welcome! I'm a senior clinician (NY, CT) treating adults, young adults, teens, couples, and parents via evidence-based methods. After learning DBT in 2008, I created DBT partial hospital programs and SAGE, a modular intensive DBT program for emerging adults and their parents. I trained other clinicians in DBT and consulted to agencies. Today, I often use DBT to help people stick to their intentions and goals, rather than feeling controlled by their moods. I draw from DBT and CBT to help patients, parents, and couples improve relationships and face fears. I often help young adults "launch" and work with their parents.

Is your child or teen dealing with anxiety, OCD, or depression? Do they feel frustrated, sad, stuck, irritable, and lonely? Symptoms like poor school performance, family conflicts, weak peer ties, and physical issues (e.g., stomachaches, headaches, sleep problems) often indicate their struggle. They may battle repetitive negative thoughts, suggesting impending doom, inadequacy, or harm, causing distress. These challenges not only hurt the child but also disrupt family harmony, leaving parents heartbroken.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
