Art is inherently therapeutic. I know because I experienced significant childhood trauma and art was a refuge for me. With the consistent presence of a warm and loving art teacher, I found both identity and stability.   Now, through the lens of psychology and spirituality, I offer this to clients.

You’re an outsider, different than the culture around you, pushed to the margins. And you’ve been keeping secrets. Dark, taboo secrets about money, death, sex, religion, female bodies, and politics. For yourself, for your family, for society. For a long time, it was easy enough to bury these secrets, to pretend it never happened, to pretend you didn’t know. But you can’t anymore. Lots of everyday and mundane things are calling these secrets to the surface; some you don’t even recognize as your own. You feel like you may crack apart. You’re paralyzed with anxiety, fiery with rage, sick with disgust, and perhaps just a bit mad.

Do you want to shift negative patterns that are holding you back? Reduce anxiety and depression? Therapy is a relationship that allows for an exploration into the deepest realms of the self in a nurturing space where you can be honest and open. We create a language for the practice of self-discovery and integration in the spirt of mutual growth and recovery; this looks different for every person. I use many techniques: talk therapy, somatic, EMDR, KAP, Parts work, mindfulness, cognitive, relational and attachment work. I am a contemplative psychotherapist who works from an integral framework, utilizing a non-pathologic view.

Who's in charge anyway?? When events or other people or you seem to be out of synch, maybe bouncing it off someone who is not in the situation with you is a good idea. I am a great listener and a proactive counselor.

Navigating life is a complex and tumultuous process. Every day, we're tugged in myriad directions, confronted with decisions at every turn that ask us to balance relationships, work, self-care, and personal growth. This constant barrage of "shoulds", responsibilities, and pressures in life creates an unrelenting current of stress and anxiety and leaves us worn thin and wondering, "why is it so hard to feel good?" It's no wonder that we find ourselves grasping at food, alcohol, tv, sex, drugs, and social media to relieve this tension. However, the relief provided by such behaviors is temporary and only exacerbates the problem.

At Greenwood Therapy I provide collaborative, strengths-based counseling for people dealing with depression, anxiety, and related disorders; trauma and grief; relationship problems; difficult transitions; and career questions. I work with individuals 18 years and older and with couples. My approach varies based on the client's needs, using insights from interpersonal and psychodynamic therapy, narrative and family systems therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based stress management. I have particular experience with issues facing clients in blended families and long-distance relationships; and I understand the challenges of changing direction in midlife, partly because counseling is my second career.

“I often feel paralyzed by fear, and I can feel my heart pounding out of my chest”...“High school/college are supposed to be the ‘best years of your life’-I’m struggling”... “I relapsed again... I'm at a loss of what to do.”...“I experience guilt and shame over distressing intrusive thoughts about taboo topics (harming someone, inappropriate behavior, etc.) that go against my morals and values.” Your struggles do not define you and I am here for you. Untreated OCD, substance abuse/addictions, adolescent issues, and anxiety/depression can feel isolating.

I have experience working with trauma, anxiety, stress, perfectionism, relationship and intimacy issues, sexuality/gender identity exploration, life transitions, grief and loss, and OCD.
I regard the body as an integration of the physical, emotional, and mental. My personal journey has given me an understanding of inner and outer connectedness and the body's innate ability to heal on all levels of being. I believe that how we relate to others begins with our relationship to ourselves. With a passion for supporting neurodiversity, gender diversity, and sexual empowerment and freedom, I combine therapy, movement, nature, and mindfulness to strengthen the mind-body connection and help individuals thrive.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
