Hello! I work with adolescents, parents, adults and couples. I create a safe space for individuals to explore and learn more about themselves. I aim to understand each individual's motivations and experience. I provide clients with insights that will help them get clarity about their circumstances in hopes of reducing symptoms. I provide psycho-education about the client's behavior and help them connect the links between their thoughts, feelings and actions. I utilize my clinical experience to determine what interventions and theoretical orientation makes the most sense for each individual to help support their progress.

We all need tools to help us navigate the difficulties of life. I am lucky to be in a position to help people gain these tools. I love working with my clients; I am always learning from them. I have a down-to-earth, accessible and active approach to my work. I draw from a variety of therapeutic techniques. I am sensitive to the interplay between social, economic, racial, emotional, and neurological factors. I continue to work in community and non-profit settings. In the Spring of 2016, I earned an Advanced Certificate from the Existential Humanistic Institute.

Feeling anxious or depressed is a reasonable reaction to the unreasonable levels of stress that young people deal with. My work is aimed at helping you make sense of your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I'm not here to tell you that you need to change. You might have behaviors you want to change, and I will support and assist for sure, but it's important that you know that your core self is whole and loveable, just the way you are. The work in therapy is about going from knowing that to believing it in your bones.

My focus is to develop a relationship with the client. This is called the two person model which is different than the old fashion practice where the doctor is one up and the client is one down. Rather, the two person model attempts to understand the client through questions and mutual discussion. I am not a silent therapist. I give feedback and remain fully engaged with the patient. Together we build a rapport. I adhere to a humanistic approach.

One of the things that haunts me about our all too human condition is how much pain we have to suffer in the ordinary conduct of our lives. Who do we turn to when we are in such despair that we don’t know where to turn? I believe all of us suffer from occasional feelings of fear, alienation, depression, confusion. Some suffer from these symptoms more than others, but we are all otherwise more or less the same. I try to connect with your deepest existential issues and help you get to know yourself intimately, in order to bring the passion and happiness than has been missing back into your life . . . or perhaps, for the first time?

Our goals in therapy are always to reduce suffering and increase happiness. Achieving this requires two essential components. First, we need awareness of how our minds work and how to help them heal. I bring that. And second, we need a willingness to look clearly at oneself and to allow new ways of thinking and acting to develop. That is the client's responsibility. Together, our job is to create a space that is open, trusting and full of genuine acceptance of whatever arises. From there it is almost certain that your life will change in welcome ways.

I believe that understanding and compassion are vital for building trust, mutual respect, and openness, all of which are essential in forming a therapeutic relationship that can encourage change. My style in therapy is a mix of person-centered, solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral, and psychodynamic theories. With children I utilize a variety of expressive therapies including play, art, narrative, sand tray and bibliotherapy. In working with children, adolescents and adults, I use a cognitive behavioral therapeutic approach.

I approach psychotherapy from a whole-person perspective and I believe therapy, along with other practices, can help us awaken to a life of meaning. In therapy I will help you identify the source of your longing to be whole, and together, we will move closer to that source, so you become re-sourced. Together we will explore your innate natural cycles and help you align to your own rhythm, so that you might meet depletion with rest and energy with creativity.

You may have come here because something is not working in your life and you want it better or because you want more from life. I come with my training, my 30 years of experience as a psychotherapist, my many more years of life experience, my mind, good heart and my intention to heal. You come with your issues, your past, perhaps with your anxiety, depression, or guilt. You also come with your strengths, some of which you might not recognize, and upon which we will build. I believe we are equal as humans, just sitting different chairs. I look forward to working with you.

Change is uncertain and stressful as it is. Our bodies and emotions may respond in a way that is overwhelming and confusing. I can imagine how daunting, isolating, and stuck one may feel. I hope to help you understand what your emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and body are trying to communicate to you. You can learn more adaptive ways of understanding and cope with your circumstances. With practice, it is relieving to reclaim your bandwidth and time to rest and pursue meaningful goals. In addition to therapy, I also conduct immigration evaluations for Medical Disability Exception (N-648).

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
