My belief is that counseling is a journey we travel together. Our first step is to define where you want to go - discovering the reasons that you have chosen to meet with me at this point in your life. We will also identify your strengths, what's working well in your life, and the things that can be changed to get you to your destination. My ultimate goal is to work myself out of a job as you develop the skills and tools that you can use in the present and the future to have the life that you desire.

As humans we all face challenges and many of us face trauma that has an impact on us throughout our entire lives causing depression, anxiety, PTSD and other various mental health concerns. These concerns can be the things that hold us back from living our life fully or being able to create a life we believe is worth living. In my practice with clients, I attempt to help people discover a way for themselves to find health, move forward and start thriving instead of surviving.

Making the choice to trust and work with someone in a therapeutic setting can be one of the scariest, but most rewarding decisions a person can make. If you find yourself here, you may be considering a journey towards long-lasting and significant change. In each stage of life, there are unique challenges that can impact your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and physical health. Lack of support, encouragement, and community can make these challenges unbearable. My role is to utilize my training to provide unconditional positive regard, encouragement, and safety in overcoming barriers and discovering effective solutions, together.

Tired of starting with eMail and ending up watching porn half the night? Tired of finding yourself in a strip club or adult bookstore when you were on your way to Home Depot, or, worse yet, to the kids' sporting event? Tired of lying? Keeping secrets? I'd like to help you find freedom from pornography and other forms of sex addiction. The reason is simple: life is full of opportunities to flourish, but addictive behaviors can hijack the ability to engage in those opportunities. Don't settle for less.

I enjoy working with a wide variety of clients, and have done so since I began practicing in 1994. Psychotherapy can be an uncomfortable experience, and I see myself as a fellow traveler in that journey. I have worked extensively with sexual abuse victims, anxiety, and depression. I am also a sex offender treatment provider.

Every individual comes with a community and a cultural identification existing within the context of greater society. Through an emotion focused/ family systems lens, I enjoy listening to and collaborating with individuals, couples, and families to therapeutically address each of these layers. Together, we focus on gaining greater awareness of emotions and the relationship to self and others, integrating the different parts of self we all experience, and connecting to natural supports that exist within our environments.

I have deep respect for all of my patients. Therapy involves change, openness, and willingness, and is a personal investment. For these reasons, I believe that the treatment you receive should be effective, and I use a blend of established research and your personal goals to ensure that it is.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
