Would you like to feel the same kindness and compassion you give others? Do you want to stop questioning your value and worth? Are you ready to find more meaning and purpose in your life? Are you looking to connect deeper with family and friends? My clients often struggle with perfectionism, low self-worth, anxiety, depression or medical issues (infertility, obesity, etc). Together we identify stuck points, repetitive problematic patterns, and other destructive behaviors that cause suffering in your life and serve as obstacles to your happiness and fulfillment. I help clients achieve self-awareness so they can make lasting changes.

As a clinical psychologist I have over 30 years of experience treating eating disorders, body disturbances, and weight problems and am the founder and director of Feeding Ourselves. Feeding Ourselves is a comprehensive program for people who want to change the way they eat and the way they confront their weight problem. Many participants have a long history of battling extra pounds. Others may not be overweight, but suffer from compulsive over eating, binge eating or bulimia. The vulnerability they share is feeling out of control with food, and a preoccupation with eating and weight that drains their lives of valuable energy.

Ambivalence about change is universal to us all. It is challenging to question the parts of ourselves that are no longer serving us, and invite space for something novel. In therapy with me, we will reflect upon the aspects of your life that are working for you, and places where you feel stagnant, dissatisfied, or empty. Even the parts of yourself that feel the most frustrating, perplexing, or harmful have arisen in attempts to help you. Together, we will explore all of these parts with openness, curiosity and wonder. I work with individuals who are interested in this exploratory approach to themselves and their relationships.

Who are you really? This is a question I ask my clients. I have been a psychotherapist and consultant for over 30 years. I draw on my innate intuitive abilities as well as my traditional clinical training to bring healing and transformation to my clients. My family systems background allows me to see the individual as a multifaceted system. What we perceive as a “problem” often reflects how we have adapted to the stress and trauma that we may have endured. Our perceived problems, such as addiction to substances, and other self- defeating patterns become encoded within our whole system, and ultimately distort our true essence.

I assist clients who are wanting to improve their lives in significant ways. While I specialize in treating eating disorders, anxiety and depression, most clients also come to me with related issues of trauma, self-confidence, struggles with change/transition, work, family relationships and other stressors. I see therapy as a collaborative process taking place in the context of an empathic relationship where support and appropriate challenge are offered. I encourage individuals to learn about themselves, understand the meaning behind symptoms and develop skills that enable them to take positive action toward well-being.

It is often difficult to be one's unique human self. How wonderful you have the courage to propel hope for deep and lasting change for your emotional struggles. Adults in individual and couples therapy deserve to experience loving relationships, and freedom from anxiety, depression, trauma, ADD, and one's idiomatic patterns of difficulty. When your strengths come to the fore, problems loosen their hold, creating the possibilities of you consistently being lovingly in charge of your own life. When your inner life is enriched, you increase possibilities for more abundance. Your private education becomes a great overall investment.

By interweaving different types of therapy, we collaborate towards your goals in a way that's effective and respectful of your time, energy and money. Each session can be useful - I track this carefully by asking for feedback and by giving choices on how we work together. The time in-between sessions also is used - through practice 'homework' we choose individually, as a couple or as a family, or through observation/thinking. This helps us to identify what helps you to change or restrains you from change - we can then work together from an attitude of curiosity rather than "shoulds".

We're the therapists for "kids who don't like therapy." These days - especially - teens are too often suffering and struggling in their homes and in our schools. And everyone could use some help: kids, parents, and the caring professionals in our schools. Throughout the state, our therapists and life coaches serve as "part of the team," helping teens to feel better, and do better. Together, we'll explore and better understand what's been happening, how to change patterns, and how to get better results!

In my practice, I often meet with adults, adolescents, families, and couples who struggle with their feelings, partner or family relationships, finding their place in the society, or just feeling too overwhelmed to deal with everyday life. Inability to cope with these kind of issues over a period of time often results in depression, anxiety or another mental disorder that disrupts healthy lives.

Obesity Therapists

Can obesity be a cause of depression and anxiety?

Yes. It can be stressful and debilitating to carry excess weight. Many people make inaccurate assumptions about people who are overweight. This stigma may lead individuals to feel badly about themselves, decreasing their self-esteem, or leading to feelings of worthlessness. An association between obesity and depression is well-established.

When should an individual seek treatment for obesity?

When obesity, or the feelings it causes, creates a disruption in your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Examples include avoiding social situations due to anxiety, an inability to participate in family life as a result of health problems, or poor performance at work due to low self-esteem or other concerns.

Are there specific medications for weight loss?

There are several prescription drugs that can help with weight loss, including semaglutide and phentermine. These drugs reduce appetite and must be prescribed by a physician. Professionals will suggest lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, before turning to drugs, which have side effects and typically are prescribed only for a short duration. Many people regain weight after taking weight loss drugs if they have not made significant lifestyle changes.

What is body positivity?

Body positivity is a cultural movement that promotes the acceptance of bodies of all sizes and types, rather than those that conform to societal ideals of beauty. It places self-worth, self-acceptance, and an appreciation for one’s body as goals to achieve a happier, healthier attitude about oneself and others, focusing on who a person is rather than what they look like.
