As your therapist, my first concern is to create a safe and supportive place where you can explore what brings you to therapy. Whether you feel stuck in an unfulfilling relationship or are searching for more meaning in your day to day life, my approach will bring movement and change. I believe the therapeutic relationship is the key to successful therapy and we will practice authentic, present-centered dialogue including emotions held in the body. As we explore what is happening in the moment we often create new experiences that can replace old, obsolete or no longer use full patterns of belief.

Therapy provides a confidential and non-judgmental space to explore one’s current life situations and ongoing patterns such as how we relate to ourselves and others. Therapy is a source of support when life events overwhelm us or conditions such as anxiety or depression affect our well being. We may discover in therapy that beliefs or ways of behaving no longer serve us and new ideas and ways of being can be discovered and learned that bring greater ease and enjoyment to our lives

If you are dealing with Couples Issues or Trauma Issues it is invaluable to have someone to assist you, to listen to you, to remind you of who you really are and most importantly that You Ae Not Alone. It takes courage to contact and see a therapist to assist you in uncovering the real problem(s), to increase knowledge about yourself, to face and apply a new understanding. Together, we can break ineffective patterns in Relationships and Recover. You are here because you would like to develop effective patterns: I believe recovery is a process of rediscovering what is always there-You. Love Is Love. All Are Welcome Here.

My approach is grounded in a deep appreciation and respect for each person's life journey and unique path toward healing, growth and wholeness. I take great care in fostering a safe, nonjudgmental, collaborative environment, with space to breathe and explore. When discomforting symptoms and difficult feelings arise, it is natural that we all want them to go away. But when we take a moment to slow down, to be peaceful and really listen, they are like honest friends helping us unfold what is wanting loving attention to grow. By listening closely together, we can get to the heart of your private struggles and engage your strengths.

I live and work in Woodstock, NY. Over the years I have seen a diversity of individuals, including couples, young people struggling to realize themselves, and those with the other challenges that we meet in our daily lives. I respect and appreciate the differences among those who meet with me. I have a good sense of humor and think that laughter, even under the most painful of circumstances can be helpful.

My specialties include: anxiety and stress reduction, grief and loss across the life-span, adult trauma, gender, ethnic and racial identity concerns, challenges to the creative process, and women focused issues.
My practice offers a safe and relaxing space to begin the psychotherapeutic journey. As a college professor and clinician for many years I offer a wide range of therapeutic approaches that go beyond talk therapy: such as mindfulness practice, mind/body awareness skills, and other psycho-educational practices. I think that good clinical treatment resides in the therapeutic relationship informed by the latest research on the brain and the gut and an overall multi-modal approach to the person(s) sitting across from me.

I work well with couples and individuals. My personal experience with meditation and mindfulness and extensive training in various modalities is front and center for guiding clients towards a balanced, self regulated and awesome life. I am a trained IMAGO therapist (Harville Hendrix's work). Clients/couples who suffer from anxiety, despair and depression will find my practice not only helpful but enlivening. I consider healing through the lens of a wellness model and not a pathological one. Sometimes it's the greatest struggle that brings about the greatest positive change.

Many of us seek out therapy when we're in the midst of change, or when we've reached a point of wanting change but are unsure how to make that happen. In either case, therapy offers us the opportunity to deepen our understanding of the circumstances which have brought about the desire, or the need, for something to be different. In collaborating with someone whose role is to reflect our experience back to us, we're often able to meet parts of our selves or our histories that had been forgotten, and we start to see how embodying ourselves more fully will create movement and fulfillment in our lives.

As your therapist, I will listen to you with care, interest, empathy, presence and compassion. I will support your emotional healing in a way that respects who you are. I will support your personal strengths, and help you engage them as fully as possible. I agree with Rogers, who believes that when a person experiences unconditional acceptance and empathic understanding from someone who is genuine and real, healing and growth occur. My style is generated from various humanistic psychotherapies with an interest in the mind/body/spirit interrelation, combined with a grounding in classical theories.

People enter therapy looking for results and relief. I like to identify issues quickly and focus on alleviating distress. In addition to couples counseling and general practice with individuals, I run support groups for adoptive parents. Parenting is a challenge. Adoptive parenting has additional challenges. My groups offer a safe space to explore issues and receive support. I take great pleasure in engaging people and offering an environment that allows people to arrive at unique solutions to their lives. I work with individuals, couples and groups.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
