My best work is empowering adults in navigating transitions while feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure of themselves. Possibly struggling with anxiety, depression, work/academic stress, relationship challenges, identity development, family pressure, or life experiences. If you live with anxiety, depression, or struggle with grief you may be used to pushing through your days while feeling tense, overwhelmed, or stuck in your own thoughts. On the outside, you might appear capable and composed, while internally your mind feels busy, your body feels on edge, or it’s hard to fully relax. In therapy, we will slow things down. We will create a safe space to understand what your mind is trying to communicate and learn ways to respond to it with more ease and compassion. The goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety, depression or grief, but to help it feel more manageable so it no longer runs your life.

When I think of therapy, I see it as a chance to study one's life and patterns non-judgmentally, with the opportunity to modify things that do not help to live a life satisfactorily. It is a self-educational experience where all thoughts and feelings and the obstacles which interfere with living are cooperatively addressed. Progressive talking takes place to work through anxiety, depression, relationships, workplace stress and parenting, as well as the whole scope of emotional challenges, mild to serious. It is a form of maturation occurring at a pace amenable to the individual. Please call for more information.

Daily stressors are inevitable; however, you do not have to navigate them alone. When anxiety, perfectionism, or pressure begin to affect your relationship with performance, self-worth, or food and body image, therapy can offer a grounded space to find clarity and relief. I specialize in working with high achievers, athletes, and military who feel stuck in cycles of self-criticism, control, procrastination, and fear-based motivation. Together, we explore how perfectionistic tendencies and high personal standards can contribute to anxiety and burnout, while also identifying strengths that support growth and resilience.

Does perfectionism, obsessive thoughts, or hyper-focus on perceived flaws keep you stuck? Do you (or your child) struggle with your body image, and/or have a negative relationship with food? Maybe you keep it together on the outside but find it hard to stop the inner chaos. Self doubt, feeling like a failure, feeling inadequate, hating yourself or being filled with shame are all indicators that it is time to make a change. I can help you create a plan and feel hope. Most of all I can help heal the pain of past experiences, self doubt/hatred and live authentically.

Therapy is about change. Your goal might be personal growth, working on a relationship(s) in which you are struggling or to figure out how to manage feelings of depression, anxiety or some other emotionally painful experience. My approach is to help you explore the factors that contribute to what you are experiencing and help you create positive and useful meaning and understanding from the process. I believe that this understanding helps you to be clear about what you want in life and to make choices that help you to feel better, reach your goals and enjoy fulfillment and success.

I specialize in working with adolescents, as well as family members, as we navigate our way through difficult years.
Most of my clients are looking for a safe place to unload their biggest fears, stress or worry. They may have struggle with anxieties that nobody else understands or have emotions that are bigger than their friends can help with. They want to be heard, listened to, and validated that they will be okay. Some have gone through trauma and abuse from a young age and may feel it is their fault or are always being criticized for how they act and feel. Being heard in an affirming, caring and calm environment can help us learn new skills and build our confidence and self esteem to put us back in charge of our outcomes in life.

I’m Katie Lear, founder of Davidson Child Anxiety Counseling, a small group practice for kids and teens ages 8–16.
Are worries taking over your child's life? A few extra requests for reassurance, another check-in before bed, or unusual fear around an activity that used to be easy might have seemed small at first. But for kids with anxiety and OCD, worries don’t STAY small. Before you know it, you’re doing everything you can to keep your child’s anxiety in check...only to see their worries continue to grow. Even if you’ve tried therapy before, it can feel like nothing works.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
