Deciding to begin therapy can be a turning point in your life. I work with children, adolescents and adults using supportive and insight-oriented psychotherapy for issues related to adjustment and stress (e.g. anxiety, depression) as well as specializing in conditions that affect the brain (e.g. learning disorders, ADHD , brain injury, memory problems). As a clinical psychologist and a neuropsychologist, I have specialized dual training in brain behavior relationships and take a psychodynamic approach when working with clients therapeutically. I also integrate cognitive behavioral techniques to help my clients meet their treatment goals.

When we find ourselves feeling stuck, burnt-out or hopeless with our current circumstances, we have the unique opportunity to develop the resilience necessary to thrive and overcome obstacles. Often in our working and personal lives we make the mistake of thinking that the longer we tough it out, the tougher we are, and the harder we work, the more successful we will be. Consider psychotherapy that develops wellness solutions that strengthen your ability to be resilient when faced with adversity and challenges.

I treat children with a range of emotional and/or behavioral difficulties. Many of the children I see are struggling with sensory sensitivities, picky eating, toileting conflicts, separation anxiety, attachment issues, ADHD , anxiety or fears, selective mutism, depression, social conflicts or isolation, or low self-esteem. Other families in my practice seek treatment to gain support around familial conflicts that present at different developmental stages, or to assuage concerns associated with significant life changes due to divorce, bereavement, or other types of loss.

Do you or your child struggle academically, emotionally, or socially? Does your school not provide necessary testing or learning accommodations and support? Or does your gifted or 2E child not receive the enrichment needed to achieve his or her full potential? Neuropsychological evaluations help students obtain the learning recommendations, school and testing accommodations, or enrichment needed for academic, emotional, and social growth. Clients and families also often find the assessment process therapeutic in itself, as it leads to understanding of individual strengths and weaknesses and clear diagnosis of any disabilities.

My background and training as an Art Therapist was a major determinant in my decision to become a Psychologist and Psychoanalyst. I was enthralled by the power, curative possibilities and revealing nature in the creative process. As a result, my area of particular interest is in working with artists, writers, photographers and individuals in the theater and music industry. I am an interactive therapist with extensive postgraduate training. When possible, I use humor in our sessions, pretty well I am told, a bit of sarcasm now and then as well!

I view therapy as a collaboration between patient and therapist. We are a team with a common objective. When you come in, we will first complete a thorough intake, and then put together a treatment plan that meets your individual needs. During therapy you will learn skills and techniques which you will practice in between sessions, and implement in your everyday life. I believe that if people understand what we are doing, why we are doing it, and how it is going to help them, then they are more likely to engage in treatment, and benefit more from therapy. When you are ready to end therapy, you will take these skills with you.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
