As a
Marriage
and Family Therapist, I recognize that people are in a reciprocal relationship with their environments.
I am drawn to working with families, namely parents and their children, as well as individuals. My knowledge exists primarily in navigating issues of trauma, grief, conflict, identity, and development of self. Supporting individuals who have experienced trauma calls for examinations of power, control, narrative, and accountability. These are all topics that I aim to lean into in my role, coupled with managing anxiety and maintaining agency in the face of fear.

I have 31 years of experience helping people who are hurting change their lives. Often, we develop skills to survive difficult situations -childhood abuse, bullying in school, a bad car accident, sexual assault, an abusive
marriage
or boss - and it's hard to stop using those old skills, even when we no longer need them. We react in a new relationship as if we have to protect ourselves from things in the past. This often leads to more pain and unwanted outcomes. I can help you recognize those maladaptive coping skills. Change is difficult and often scary, but so worth it. I will be there cheerleading you as you practice new skills.

As a
Marriage
and Family Therapist and Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, I believe that therapy is a journey that can provide valuable perspective and facilitate healing. In my sessions, I aim to create a supportive and safe environment where my clients can work to reclaim their lives from fear, pain, and hopelessness. By exploring the systems, families, and relationships that shape their experiences, my clients can gain insight into their inner selves and learn how to cope with past traumas and current stressors. Together, we can work towards moving forward rather than remaining stuck.

As a 40-something with 15+ years of clinical experience in
Marriage
and Family Therapy, I have found that life is a journey of learning filled with twists and turns, many of which are beyond our power and control. It seems that when we are faced with the choices that naturally proceed from this journey, often we choose something not because it aligns with our highest value, but because it protects our unspoken vulnerabilities. If our greatest loyalty lies with our greatest fear or pain, then that fear or pain holds the potential to be either the cage that imprisons us or the opportunity that grows us to a new level of development.

After completing my Master's Degree at Syracuse University I broadened my work to include depression, anxiety, adolescents and
marriage counseling
.
The psychiatrist Scott Peck wrote "Life is difficult. ...but once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters." One of the guiding principles of my work is the reality that life presents challenges to all of us. Those challenges often require us to examine views we have held for many years, and work to gain a new perspective. My experience with clients has shown me that for those who seek to grow and learn more about themselves, their relationships, and their lives, there are always answers.

How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
