I see our work together as a very active collaboration. From the moment we meet, I’m learning from you what we’re working toward, what has gotten in the way, and what supports you in relationships. I try to be direct and transparent about myself and our therapeutic process together. My aim is to make as much of yourself welcome in the room as possible and to make as much of your experience talkable as possible. I offer ideas on how to integrate the work you’re doing in therapy into your life. I help people with many issues (anxiety, depression, transitions, self-concept), with specialties in trauma &
LGBTQIA
+ health.

I aim to prioritize
queer
joy in my work.
Therapy is one of the most difficult and brave steps we can take to unwrite the stories that were told for us. As someone who always heard therapy was for "crazy" people growing up, I know the hesitancy and unease that can come from starting a new therapy journey. It is my goal to help my clients feel safe and empowered as they begin their work. I have been dedicated to creating a space that allows for personal growth through challenging and deconstructing the narratives we have believed about ourselves that are no longer true. Finding our voice in a world dedicated to dismissing it is the greatest strength we can harness.

I work primarily with people of color and
queer
and
trans
folks coping with anxiety, depression, life transitions and relationship issues. I aim to help you tune into how you're truly feeling and why, while centering radical self-compassion. Healing and liberation come in many different forms and we will work collaboratively to understand your goals and individual needs. Ours will be an open space, free of judgment, to explore thoughts and feelings you may not otherwise have a place to address. One of the first steps toward healing is being seen and heard authentically and in our work together we will begin there.

I'm Jen! I am a
queer
, neurodivergent (ADHD) therapist. I am sex/kink affirming, sex-work positive, cannabis friendly, gender affirming, & ND affirming. The clients I work with are of the human variety, and because of this they usually have a whole lifetime of experiences that have molded and shaped them into who they are today. Since life is life, those experiences probably weren't all good and now they're left with some pain, and maybe that pain comes out in sadness, or maybe it comes out in anger, or maybe it's left them not loving themselves very much. Whatever the case it brought them here to make it go away.

Finding an affirmative therapist can be a difficult & complex process. For many of us, living as our authentic selves can be challenging. Sometimes there are multiple barriers & difficult decisions ahead. You don’t have to navigate it all alone. Whether gender identity or sexuality is a focus of treatment or you're dealing with other unrelated things, a therapist with a solid knowledge base & understanding of your needs & background is crucial. Many clients work with me because of my expertise & 10+ years of experience, or because they prefer working with a therapist who has first-hand knowledge of
trans
/
queer
identities.

LGBTQIA

+ Accepting New Clients + In therapy we will build upon your own inner strength and authentic self to process and heal pain or psychological injuries that may be getting in the way of living a healthy, integrated and fulfilling life. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process, that is, we will work together to navigate and explore any problems or patterns in your life that may be contributing to the challenges that you face. I am not a therapist that will tell you what to do, but I will help you explore all the parts that make up YOU, including the parts of you that are resilient and know the way forward.

I specialize in
LGBTQ
+ therapy for individuals, couples, and families.
As a Marriage and Family Therapist and Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, I believe that therapy is a journey that can provide valuable perspective and facilitate healing. In my sessions, I aim to create a supportive and safe environment where my clients can work to reclaim their lives from fear, pain, and hopelessness. By exploring the systems, families, and relationships that shape their experiences, my clients can gain insight into their inner selves and learn how to cope with past traumas and current stressors. Together, we can work towards moving forward rather than remaining stuck.

I self-identify as neurodiverse and
queer
, and many clients work with me because of my expertise and because they prefer working with a therapist who has lived experience.
Emotions can be complex and confusing, especially distressing emotions like anxiety, anger, grief, sadness, jealousy, and fear. Understanding and effectively regulating emotions requires a safe space for exploration, curiosity, and awareness. When you work with me, you work with someone who is committed to creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental therapeutic connection where you can choose to be fully emotionally, physically, and mentally vulnerable.

I provide affirming mental healthcare to gender-diverse and
queer
individuals.
I love working with people, with our complex selves and sometimes messy thoughts and emotions. Whether you're an adult, child, teenager, or parent working with me, I offer a non-judgmental space to figure things out. I work with people who feel like they don't quite fit in, who have experienced difficult relationships, challenging parenting situations, and other circumstances. Many of my clients have experienced negative feedback due to their sexuality, gender, weight, race, or mental health status.

Any individual, couple, or family making the decision to embark on therapy has made a brave step toward growth and change. Once rapport and safety is established, giving the self permission to be raw and vulnerable is what I strive for with clients. Feeling safe to explore discomfort and navigating different means of communication is at the heart of my work. The approach of curious exploration and demystification helps the individuals, couples and families that I work with resolve stressors related to anxiety, depression, grief, relational issues, work and academic influences, family dynamics, and
LGBTQ
issues.

I have worked extensively with the
LGBTQ
, international, and academic communities.
Please see website link to the left for more information. I am a psychoanalytic psychologist. That means I will listen intensively, and help you express the parts of your experience and story that tend to get left out ("the unconscious"). I believe this helps you find freedom from problems and symptoms, and leads to your growth as a person. I am especially influenced by Lacanian psychoanalytic theory, but also existential and phenomenological theory. In short, this means my focus is on your humanity and its expression, rather than your conformity or "adaptation" (though therapy can help you in your work and relationships!)

Prior to entering private practice, I worked for over 20 years in outpatient and inpatient mental health settings providing therapy to a diverse population. I specialize in working with the
LGBTQIA
+ community, and often work with clients on exploring their identity. In particular, working with clients who have experienced trauma, including sexual abuse, and how this intersects with the way they see themselves, and their overall sense of self-worth. I also have over 15 years experience working with those suffering from depression, anxiety and severe mental illness.

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?
Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.
Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.
How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?
Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.
Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?
While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
