I have 31 years of experience helping people who are hurting change their lives. Often, we develop skills to survive difficult situations -childhood abuse, bullying in school, a bad car accident, sexual assault, an abusive marriage or boss - and it's hard to stop using those old skills, even when we no longer need them. We react in a new
relationship
as if we have to protect ourselves from things in the past. This often leads to more pain and unwanted outcomes. I can help you recognize those maladaptive coping skills. Change is difficult and often scary, but so worth it. I will be there cheerleading you as you practice new skills.

Couples
in all stages come to therapy. Whether love is new and they're trying to figure out life's challenges before taking the next step, or love is old and familiar but maybe it hasn't been working well lately (or for the last several years). It's best to come in and sit down with a third party not connected to your family or friends and be able to sort through everything in a supportive and safe environment. I even work with people who have decided not to be a couple, but are committed to co-parenting.

I believe that every human is the expert of their own story and strive to empower clients to take on an active and collaborative role within the therapeutic
relationship
.
I strongly believe in the power of relationships to heal and inspire profound growth, when built upon a foundation of co-created safety and liberation. I strive to create a nonjudgmental therapeutic environment where clients can feel free to express their thoughts, feelings, and desires that may be considered taboo in other environments. I have personal and professional experience with supporting those who have been othered and bring authenticity and compassionate curiosity to the therapeutic space. I work to build awareness through exploring personal histories then drawing connections and identifying patterns across the lifetime.

Life can be a challenging process. You don't have to tackle life's problems alone. Sometimes we need some extra help to be the best version of ourselves. The process begins by identifying barriers that are blocking us from achieving our desired goals. Life is an ongoing journey. Therapy can increase our self-awareness and improve our overall health and well-being. I welcome you - with open arms - to begin the therapeutic process and begin to look at those obstacles in life.

Any individual, couple, or family making the decision to embark on therapy has made a brave step toward growth and change. Once rapport and safety is established, giving the self permission to be raw and vulnerable is what I strive for with clients. Feeling safe to explore discomfort and navigating different means of communication is at the heart of my work. The approach of curious exploration and demystification helps the individuals,
couples
and families that I work with resolve stressors related to anxiety, depression, grief, relational issues, work and academic influences, family dynamics, and LGBTQ issues.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
