Couples in all stages come to therapy. Whether love is new and they're trying to figure out life's challenges before taking the next step, or love is old and familiar but maybe it hasn't been working well lately (or for the last several years). It's best to come in and sit down with a third party not connected to your family or friends and be able to sort through everything in a supportive and safe environment. I even work with people who have decided not to be a couple, but are committed to co-parenting.

I am a licensed therapist specializing in providing services to individuals, couples , and families for a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, sexuality issues, grief and loss, addiction, and many others.
For everyone, life has challenges, and sometimes those challenges can cause us great pain and suffering. When you find you are having difficulty with feelings or relationships, and that you need someone to help you, therapy can be a powerful tool for finding relief from your suffering. One of the most important parts of therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the client.

I have been providing psychotherapy services in central New York for thirty-six years working with individuals, couples , and families regarding a variety of problems and issues. These experiences have taught me about the struggles that can come from being a human being in this complex, confusing, and evolving world. Despite your efforts to change you may find yourself still unhappy, discouraged, or lost. Changing oneself can seem like it should be easy and quick. Often it can be harder and take longer than we think. Sometimes we develop ways to avoid the pain of our issues which can create relief, but rarely does it help us heal.

It is a joy and an honor to work with individuals who come with the hope of finding a place of comfort and safety, a place where they can begin to explore their emotional needs while using the therapy relationship as a platform for this journey. As a provider in the mental health field for over 20 years, I work to offer this relationship and feel that those who make this challenging step are courageous people who work to heal themselves and in response, bring this good work and its results into all the relationships in their life. It is a wonderful journey for those that allow me to stand beside.

It's time to end the cycle of overthinking and its hold over you. If your here, I am assuming you are exhausted, stressed or overwhelmed with the repeated thoughts in your head. You're tired of second guessing. You're overthinking about the process of therapy as we speak. You're hoping to find the magical fix to ceasing the daily, excessive and daunting anxiety that you feel no one truly understands. Do you have a hard time slowing down the hamster wheel of thoughts once the cycle begins? Maybe even your thoughts have been so powerful they have created self-doubt or impacted your relationship with others. Are we getting close?

Any individual, couple, or family making the decision to embark on therapy has made a brave step toward growth and change. Once rapport and safety is established, giving the self permission to be raw and vulnerable is what I strive for with clients. Feeling safe to explore discomfort and navigating different means of communication is at the heart of my work. The approach of curious exploration and demystification helps the individuals, couples and families that I work with resolve stressors related to anxiety, depression, grief, relational issues, work and academic influences, family dynamics, and LGBTQ issues.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
