You may be wondering what's wrong with you and why this keeps happening, or whether you're depressed.
Life has a lot of demands that can cause us to overthink our daily activities and take a toll on both our mental and physical well-being. We can help you find that balance and a feeling of relief in your life while finding a way for you to manage your family, work, and social networks. It is our belief that everyone is an expert in their own life, and we hope you will allow us to understand your own subjective views so we can work together. In therapy, our approach comes from understanding the importance of trust and honesty between a the client and his/her therapist. We see counseling as a safe place for you to heal from current and past emotional wounds. Our sessions are based upon a calm and inviting environment to make you feel comfortable enough to work through any current struggles. During treatment, we emphasize the importance of using multiple techniques and approaches to best fit your individual needs. We understand the importance of incorporating the whole person into treatment and developing a plan to help you succeed in every aspect of your life.

I work with children, teens, adults, and families to develop skills and strategies for confronting issues such as anxiety, trauma, panic-attacks, suicidal ideations, depression, grief, and anger management.
Everyone deserves someone in their life whom they can trust. You deserve to be heard, and to have someone in your life that is actually listening. My goal is to be that person for my clients. Through a therapeutic relationship grounded in empathy and genuineness, we can work together to give you the power to tackle the issues most concerning you. By using cognitive-behavioral skills and mindfulness techniques, my goal is to expose my clients to the value of self-worth, the importance of nurturing one’s self-worth, and ultimately crafting a more optimistic version of one's self and their future.

In my years of experience as a counselor, I have worked with individuals from the ages 13+ through anxiety, depression, rapid mood changes, and trauma.
When life becomes challenging, we look for the light at the end of the tunnel. The light appears far, and we don't believe we can make it. With the help of therapy, the journey becomes bearable.

Therapy is a time to reflect on, and adjust to, life issues. It's a time to explore how your thoughts and beliefs about yourself and the world color your emotional experiences today. Some people know exactly what they need, while others need to gently explore the cause and meaning of their discomfort and emotional pain. My task is to match what I do to this need and serve as a guide along the way. I have been in practice for over 25 years assisting individuals, groups, and families with all manner of behavioral health, relationship, and life problems.

My job is to help you identify patterns, to better understand yourself and to give you ways to adjust while staying true to who you are. There are a variety of ways to do this, and each session is geared exactly to your needs.

Emily Dickinson’s poem “Not in Vain”, hung on my wall growing up and I often think its essence seeped into my being. She wrote, “If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain: If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain”. As therapists, we choose to work within the world of emotions and behaviors, learning healthy techniques to bring balance to our mind, body, and spirit. Counseling is a judgement free setting, with an objective listener; where everyone is welcome and can be supported.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
