I am intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) which emphasizes learning effective coping skills.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist and have been helping people to improve their quality of life for over 25 years. I believe that change is achievable when we find greater balance; between emotions and rational thinking, between work and play, independence vs. seeking help, attention to ourselves vs. attention to others. There are many reasons why we can become stuck-- thoughts, habits, past experiences-- and therapy can help to identify and strengthen more effective ways of managing problems.

In treating couples I have worked with LGBTQ+ couples, Interfaith couples, families navigating child learning differences, couples dealing with infidelity, and couples making important family planning decisions.
I have 22 years of experience in working with adults and adolescents who present with a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, ADHD, identity formation, trauma, parenting issues, family conflict, and relationship difficulties. I work with clients to understand the root of their current difficulties, and to help them develop the insight that they will need to avoid repeating problematic patterns. I meet the client where he/she is at to work on the issues that both feel most relevant and also interfere most with their enjoyment of life. There is a dual focus on symptom relief and on building introspection and self-esteem.

I have experience with: Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Couple and Couple's Sexuality Therapy, Parenting Issues, Cultural Differences, Recovery from Trauma, Learning Difficulties,.
Psychotherapy is about becoming conscious of who you are, and how you impact your world. People come for psychotherapy when the ways in which they are acting, behaving, and living in the world are no longer working well for them. All kinds of events can shake us up to the point where we need help to adjust to something new. I like to think psychotherapy is an experience in which you can focus on feelings that keep you stuck, and on feelings that help you grow. It is a place to find your own creative solution to how best to live life.

The testing is utilized to diagnose and/or evaluate individuals with Attention Deficit Disorder, verbal and non-verbal learning disorders , neurological disorders including traumatic brain injury, and psychiatric disorders.
I have been a psychotherapist and a neuropsychologist for over 25 years. As a therapist, I have extensive experience working with individuals in all stages of the life cycle; childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Each developmental stage has its own struggles and requires specific adaptations and interventions. Psychotherapy must be a collaborative and individualized journey. By understanding our emotional states and behavior patterns we are able to develop a greater sense of control and new and more effective strategies/skills to cope with life's stresses. I utilize an insight oriented approach in addition to targeted behavioral intervention and specific educational strategies with parents and families.

Education and Learning Disabilities Therapists

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
