"What can children do when they feel worried?" Children experience fears and worries that make their lives more challenging. It can be overwhelming and frustrating for parents to see their child struggling with anxiety, but they do not have to handle their fears and worries alone. Many children can overcome their anxiety by learning ways to manage and cope with these feelings. I teach children ways to think and behave differently to help decrease their anxiety.

I have taught therapist-in-training at two universities for the past decade, run a training program for clinicians, and have authored numerous articles and four books: on trauma, child /adolescent treatment, group therapy, and working with boys.
Never thought you'd find yourself looking for a therapist, or had a disappointing therapy experience before? Much of the success of treatment depends on finding someone whom you can trust, who is as invested in seeing you make progress as you are. I have a solid track record working with children , adolescents, adults and families to create change in their lives...even when situations feel hopeless.

I assess children and adults ages 5 through senior years.
I have been a psychotherapist and a neuropsychologist for over 25 years. As a therapist, I have extensive experience working with individuals in all stages of the life cycle; childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Each developmental stage has its own struggles and requires specific adaptations and interventions. Psychotherapy must be a collaborative and individualized journey. By understanding our emotional states and behavior patterns we are able to develop a greater sense of control and new and more effective strategies/skills to cope with life's stresses. I utilize an insight oriented approach in addition to targeted behavioral intervention and specific educational strategies with parents and families.

My psychotherapy with adolescents and children , and their parents, focuses on parent- child problems, problems with peers (including shyness), anxiety and sadness, and school related problems and, in particular, how developing personality disorders impact self development and interaction with others.
I do individual psychotherapy with adults, children and adolescents, and couples and families. I work with my clients to improve their relationships and aspects of their personalty and feelings about themselves; to better manage and understand emotions such as depressed mood and anxiety; and to reduce problems with partners, children , and co-workers. I typically use an integrative approach that incorporates psychodynamic and cognitive principles, and my clients and I construct a climate that feels safe for examining the difficult emotions, thoughts, and situations that have interfered with their pleasure and satisfaction.

When children , teens, or young adults show mood or behavioral changes or are going through a difficult period of transition, I can help. In the supportive setting of therapy, we can find constructive ways to understand feelings, manage problem behaviors, and communicate effectively with others. We can work in a more open, exploratory way or a more structured, goal-oriented way depending on your individual needs. I also collaborate with parents and outside professionals for more wholistic care.

As an experienced therapist with postgraduate training, I have worked with adults, children and couples with a variety of concerns.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, distracted and unable to feel like your "normal" self because of worry or sadness? Are you and your partner constantly engaged in conflict and longing for a restored connection? Is your child exhibiting behaviors in school or home that have left you feeling ill equipped, confused or angry? As a psychoanalytic psychotherapist I believe that the way to make change for a more satisfying life is to explore, understand and find the meaning behind our patterns and past experiences including what may be outside our awareness.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
