In what ways is parenthood more difficult than you thought it would be? Maybe your child is struggling or having tantrums. Perhaps you feel constantly overwhelmed. Maybe you are burnt out trying to be a “good” parent while managing all the other parts of your life. Or your family could be facing a major transition or crisis that you are unsure how to navigate. Maybe you feel lost or sad because you don't recognize yourself. Parenthood can often be messy, emotional, and very, very hard. Having appropriate support can help you feel more content and better able to manage all the challenges in your life.

I have experience and a special interest working with parenting issues, infertility and interpersonal difficulties.
In my 28 years working as a psychotherapist, I continue to focus on building a trusting and collaborative relationship with my patients/clients. It is my belief that all good work in therapy is based upon this foundation. I approach each session with the goals of maintaining that relationship, addressing short time issues/struggles, and looking at the underlying connections to daily events and interactions. By using this 3 pronged approach, we can understand ongoing patterns that interfere with achieving the best quality and satisfaction in one's life.

With many families adopting older and special needs children, I give them support in parenting these children, who have been traumatized and/or have special medical or developmental challenges.
Your plan was to have at least one child by a certain age. But month after month, you realize it's not happening. If you hear "just relax and you'll get pregnant" once more do you think you will scream? Are you tired of infertility taking control of your life? The infertility counseling I provide will give you a safe, supportive place to share your frustrations and emotions and take back some of the control. By identifying your personal goals, strengths and implementing copies strategies, I can help give you the control back, help you make decisions, and move forward through this difficult journey.

I work with issues of anxiety, depression, trauma, loss/grief, parenting , and healthy behavior change.
Does life feel overwhelming and not how you imagined it would be? Do you feel like you are a human "doing" instead of a human "being"? Do you feel anxious or depressed, hoping that happiness will come when people or circumstances change? Ultimately, you are the only person who has the ability to make the changes necessary to find inner peace and balance in your life. Let's work together to identify your personal strengths and use them to move you toward the life you want to live. You do not have to feel "stuck" forever.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
