I have experience in substance use , anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, LGBTQ+ and gender identity concerns.
Whether this is your first experience in therapy or you've attempted many times before, there is always a chance for internal growth. I have been providing therapy for individuals for the past 9 years and continue to feel honored to walk beside clients as they make the most incredible life changes. We all have something that is preventing us from becoming the best version of ourselves. The important piece is not what is keeping you stuck, but what are you willing to do to make a change.

Struggling with substance use disorders can often be lonely, isolating and confusing. There is a lot of help offered out there, but so often what's being offered can be confusing and conflicting. Is addiction a behavior? A spiritual malady? A disease? Or is it something more? My own path of recovery took me many attempts and eventually led me to school to seek the science behind substance use disorders, to recovery rooms, to many therapists for personal recovery, and to lots of different religious avenues in search of meaning and understanding. What I found has illuminated my own path and practice. I love to pass these insights on.

Disconnection from our true selves may lead to issues communicating with loved ones, career dissatisfaction, decreased sense of self-worth, substance use , or playing a role in this world you never asked for.
Establishing yourself, and your identity, is a lifelong process. You are not alone when you face questions including: Who am I? What is my purpose? Who do I want in my life? What do I stand for? Why am I here? When we consider these questions, along with countless others branching from these, you might find yourself overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or frustrated. Attempting to navigate this process, you may face societal expectations, dysfunctional family dynamics, economic challenges or other stressors operating against you. While desire to be stable, authentic, and true to self is shared, your story will always be unique.

Over the past 30 years, I have worked with people struggling with a variety of distressing issues ranging from grief, substance abuse, family members impacted by substance abuse, struggles with mood disorders, men's issues and trauma. These issues are pages of our life story. Many times people feel isolated; the idea of sharing their story with a "stranger" feels too daunting, too personal. I find most clients, in the end, desire to feel more comfortable in their own skin. Identifying behavior patterns and ways we think and feel about ourselves is a huge first step toward making meaningful change.

As unique individuals, our life journeys take us through many wonderful and unpleasant experiences. Our experiences can result in feelings of displeasure, depression, anxiety, and stress that can impact us individually and our relationships with others. Talk therapy is a non-judgmental atmosphere that can help you express your thoughts and feelings in a welcoming and safe environment. Therapy can help individuals look more closely at the repetitive patterns in their feelings and behaviors and learn through reflection, self-discovery, insight, and how to re-frame and rebuild their lives positively.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
