Ongoing experiences of verbal, physical, or sexual abuse, neglect, and bullying can lead to these symptoms.
The mind, brain, body, and emotions are all interconnected. We believe that the deepest healing nurtures a process of transformation that goes beyond symptom reduction. We are often able to help people who have previously had difficulty making progress in treatment. In our practice we focus on healing intergenerational cycles of traumatization and violence.

Since 1983, I have dedicated myself to helping thousands of individuals and couples whose lives are affected by a wide variety of issues including depression, anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, relationship issues, sexual abuse recovery, borderline personality disorder, OCD, and just generally feeling stuck.
I offer an interactive, practical, comprehensive, respectful and resourceful style of therapy that helps people shift their focus from wondering, "What's wrong with me?" to asking a very different question: "What's right about me?" My sessions, for both individuals and couples, are designed to identify effective and practical problem-solving strategies, as well as to uncover inner strengths and healing resources to address your concerns. I am open-minded and value cultural and religious diversity.

I have additional training in perinatal mental health, infant mental health, TF-CBT, and child sexual abuse.
Sometimes individuals and families need help handling scary situations. Psychological trauma is frequently misunderstood and can cause shame, guilt, and fear. I offer a space free of judgement in which to better understand behavior, trauma, family dynamics, attachment, pregnancy, birth, new parenthood, and sexuality. These issues effect family and relational functioning and can result in high-conflict family dynamics. If you have lost your sense of self or sense of family, I am here to help you chart a path back to yourself and each other.

I specialized in working with veterans, first responders, and all individuals looking to heal from trauma - whether that comes from childhood, sexual abuse, or everyday life.
There’s a wisdom in you that knows there's more to healing than just talking, and you're ready to explore what that means. Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed deciding where to start. Or you’ve been in therapy for a while and feel stagnant. There are some clear goals you’d like to work on—connecting better with a spouse or loved one; learning to trust yourself ; healing from trauma, whether recent or in the past; understanding but not being controlled by unexpected emotions; or showing up more present for the moments that matter most.

We specialize in helping people heal from trauma, whether it’s from a single major life event (such as a car accident or sexual assault) or ongoing hardship (for instance, growing up in a chaotic home environment or repeatedly having their feelings invalidated).
We believe in the benefits of evidence-based practice, which means combining the approaches that are most supported by research with each individual’s preferences and unique circumstances in mind.

It can be exhausting at times and things can fall apart quickly. Therapy can be helpful for not just the couple or family, but the individual. This profile is for a group practice.

Painful experiences can shake us to our core, often leading us to craft narratives about ourselves based on these challenges. These stories might leave you feeling misunderstood and struggling to forge a strong sense of self, especially when your lived experience doesn’t align with societal norms. This can manifest as debilitating symptoms, difficulty connecting with others, and damaging self-beliefs, causing you to question your inherent worth and identity. Despite what your inner critic may tell you, embracing your authentic self is possible.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
