Schema Therapy in Rochester, NY
Life is an adventure. Sometimes there are high mountains to climb, rough waters swim, or dragons to tame, but you don’t have to face them alone. I’m here because I know what it’s like to feel like you’re drowning. My goal as a therapist is to provide a place where people can step out of the storm and breathe. Working with 18+ adults, I use trauma-informed and a harm reduction framework, at a client led pace. This means I will not expect you to “dive right in” and share your deepest fears or darkest secrets minutes after meeting me. There’s no pressure here. Whatever your focus is, that is where we will start.

I am a Certified Brainspotting Therapist in addition to being trained in the following: Internal Family Systems, Schema Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
I’ve provided traditional talk therapy for many years and I am excited to offer a different approach! Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an innovative approach that combines the use of ketamine with therapy to facilitate healing and therapeutic breakthroughs. KAP has been shown to be effective in treating various issues, especially when traditional treatments have been unsuccessful. Ketamine helps clients explore their thoughts, emotions, and traumatic experiences more deeply, while I support and heal with the psychotherapy piece in a safe space. PLEASE note: this is a specialized service as an adjunct to your current therapy

I would like to first start with saying Congratulations to making the first step in prioritizing your mental health! It is a courageous decision to work on ourselves! Therapy can be the beginning of a life changing endeavor for many and it all begins with you. HI! My name is Erin and I, too, have made that same decision in my life to seek better understanding of myself as well as working through challenges that have gotten me “stuck” at times in my life. I share this because I feel it important for my patients to know that my own personal journey allows me to be empathetic and compassionate to patient’s needs and struggles.

Using CBT, CBT-I, DBT, and Schema Therapy, we build practical tools and insight.
Welcome! I specialize in working with anxiety, relationship challenges, and insomnia—areas that often overlap and reinforce one another in ways that can feel exhausting and hard to untangle. You might notice your mind constantly racing, getting stuck in loops of overthinking, or feeling on edge in ways that impact your relationships and your ability to rest. Together, we’ll slow things down and begin to understand the patterns that keep you feeling stuck.
I am LGBTQ+ affirming and intentionally create a space that is inclusive of diverse identities, relationship types, and subcultures. You don’t have to filter or edit yourself here

Feeling disconnected from your body, your desire, or your partner? Questioning your relationship, navigating intimacy after betrayal, or trying to rediscover closeness after life changes like parenthood? Maybe you’re unpacking sexual identity, cultural expectations, or years of being told who you’re supposed to be instead of who you actually are.

Overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, or lost in your thoughts and misunderstood by those around you? You may be fed up with constantly worrying about everything, your health, your relationships, your future, or your ability to cope. You might not even remember a time when things felt calm or manageable. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to feel more grounded and in control. You’re ready to reconnect with yourself and improve your emotional well-being. Most of all, you’re ready to feel like yourself again—confident, present, and whole.

Have you been feeling more stuck lately, like you’re not able to control how you react internally or externally with others?
Does it feel like you’re watching yourself repeating a lot of the same tried and true patterns to navigate changes, but not getting the same results?
Do you feel like you cannot seem to communicate and express yourself to others, or you’re in a position with a partner or family that feels impossible?
I hold sacred and dig into the work in helping you feel the most like yourself - whether that is a version of yourself you have not met yet, or have not been in touch with for quite some time.

Accepting AETNA! Hi, I'm Mel Joy, a healer with 25+ years of experience witnessing how resilient people can be. We all experience ebbs & flows of transitions and struggles, while constantly evolving. Life can be both beautiful & messy, and I'm humbled and honored to help you sort through it in individual and/or group therapy.
Our minds & emotions uniquely shape our perception of reality. No two people have the same experience, and there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" treatment modality. No matter how different we may be, one thing we all share is the capacity for joy & pain, and everything in between.

You’ve found yourself here because you (or someone you care about) are struggling and you have an intense need to no longer feel consumed by emotional turmoil. While the mask you’ve perfected to conceal your pain has provided a sense of safety and security for some time, trying to keep it intact over and over again has become isolating, exhausting and burdensome. Regardless of what sparks the shift in your life to seek therapy, doing so is an act of bravery that deserves to be celebrated, and I have deep respect for all that you’ve experienced and the choices you've made along the way.

You are my ideal client. I may not know you, but my approach allows me to learn from you by being taught about you, by you. I claim no expertise. We are all people, sharing a common experience on this planet. You know and have experienced things I have not, and vice versa. Let's start by telling each other the truth, and see if we can learn more in the process by listening to one another. I have a wide range of experiences with all shades of life: Men's mental health, postpartum challenges, grief and loss, eating disorders, anxiety and depression, trauma, relationships, identity and change. Name it, I've heard it.

Schema Therapy
How does schema therapy work?
Schema therapy is based on the idea that maladaptive thought patterns formed in childhood—that other people can never be relied on, for example—can interfere with healthy functioning in adulthood. Accordingly, schema therapy works by directly targeting such unhealthy schemas, identifying their consequences, and replacing them with more adaptive ways of thinking. To this end, schema therapists aim to “reparent” the client by offering what they didn’t get in childhood—validation, for instance, or compassion—to reorient their worldview.
Is schema therapy evidence-based?
Schema therapy is still considered relatively new, and research on its efficacy is still in progress. However, some studies have concluded that it can be effective at treating certain mental health conditions, most notably personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder. Evidence for its efficacy in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD is promising but less conclusive, and experts warn that much of the existing research is of low quality.
Is schema therapy a type of CBT?
Schema therapy is based on many principles of CBT, most notably the process of recognizing and challenging maladaptive thought patterns. But because schema therapy also draws from other approaches, including psychoanalysis and Gestalt therapy, it is not considered a form of CBT. It also typically delves deeper into the client’s childhood than does CBT.
How does schema therapy work?
Schema therapy does not call for a set number of sessions and is instead open-ended, with the treatment timeline depending on the client’s primary concern(s), progress, and preferences. Treatment that lasts between six months and two years is common, though many clients will start to see progress much earlier than that.
