I've worked in the mental health field since 2000 with various populations (individuals, couples and families), however, my specialties include men 's studies, pornography/sexual addiction, relationship health for married couples & EMDR. I especially find men experience challenges in life and lack the means or opportunities to be supported, validated heard. I strive to be practical and direct, yet effective in fostering change. Whether guiding couples in marriage prep or in marital strain, I develop understanding of relationships, creating an open, honest and safe communication style which fosters intimacy through challenges.

On any given day, I might see a woman with career issues, a man with emotional intimacy concerns, a couple with communication difficulties and a child with angry outbursts.
My therapeutic style is based on the belief that good rapport is essential to accomplish our therapeutic goals. While I think in terms of family of origin issues, I intervene through many diverse approaches depending on the needs of the person. These approaches include thoughts, bodily sensations, feelings, and the experiences of childhood. I follow the lead of whom I am working with and tailor my psychotherapeutic work to fit where they are at in their psychological development. A primary focus is to help one become at ease with oneself.

I am particularly passionate about working with those going through challenging life transitions, LGBTQ concerns, and men 's issues.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of young adults and young professionals. I love working with others to find or create their own meaning and identity. Often this requires working on the issues that get in the way, like anxiety, depression, grief, or stress. Whether through a desire to change circumstances, improve self-compassion, or develop better relationships with important people, forming or changing your sense of self will be one of the most important experiences of your life.

We all have stories that we do not read out loud. Yet, what we struggle to realize is that many of these stories we tell ourselves are not always written by us. Through our work together, we can put the pen back in your hands and re-author these stories. Individual Therapy for Preteens (Ages 9-12), Teens (Ages 13-19) and Adults (20+)

My ideal client is someone who recognizes room for improvement in their communication and they are willing to do homework, watching a YouTube video of Gottman, filling out papers or reading articles/books. They would like to have confidence in their ability to get through conflict without hostility. They are willing to work to get there. Some are on the verge of divorce and want to determine if they should stay together. Others want to get the spark back.

I am looking to help those who are struggling with inner doubt, self-esteem issues, anxiety & identity surrounding either gender/sexuality or both. My own personal journey has brought me to become a therapist. I am a psychotherapist specializing in growth-oriented counseling with adults & couples. My clients typically work to increase awareness of their present life patterns which lead to various forms of emotional distress. This pain often causes significant disruption in their social, work, physical lives or intimate relationships. Early life experiences influence how we all experience our lives today. Insights and associations during talk therapy often bring previously unseen dynamics to light leading to healthier choices and increased fulfillment. Sessions take place weekly over the course of many months or more for lasting growth.

In the heart of every problem lies its solution. We spend enormous amounts of time and energy searching for answers outside ourselves, when the answers lie within. Heartwork is a creative process, which teaches one to find fundamental solutions to both everyday problems and the more difficult life questions, transforming "problems" into doorways to compassion, insight and joy. My award-winning book, "Heartwork: How To Get What You Really, REALLY Want" gives one my orientation and the primary tools for working through one's issues. The e-book version can be downloaded at my website: www.awakentheheart.org.

Struggling with substance use disorders can often be lonely, isolating and confusing. There is a lot of help offered out there, but so often what's being offered can be confusing and conflicting. Is addiction a behavior? A spiritual malady? A disease? Or is it something more? My own path of recovery took me many attempts and eventually led me to school to seek the science behind substance use disorders, to recovery rooms, to many therapists for personal recovery, and to lots of different religious avenues in search of meaning and understanding. What I found has illuminated my own path and practice. I love to pass these insights on.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
