The therapeutic relationship is a vital aspect to client success.
The mission of Path of Discovery Counseling Services is to guide millennial women of color on a path of discovery, healing, and self-reflection by examining, envisioning, and exploring how they can live a more authentic and peaceful life. You may be booked and busy, find that you put other peoples needs over your own, labeled as a "Strong Black woman," or all three! Together we will take a holistic view of your life, and identify patterns that may contribute to your current state. From there I guide you through unlearning what isn't healthy and learn a new way of being that feels authentic to you.

Many people experience problems with self-esteem, depression, relationship issues, and loneliness.
It is important that the counseling environment be safe and respectful so the both client strengths and needs are understood. Actively working together, we can focus on specific issues/needs in each client's current life situation. This can be approached in a variety of ways. We may focus on identifying and expressing feelings, learning to think more accurately about current problems and possible solutions, making meaning out of past or current struggles as part of one's "life story", learning strategies to cope with intense and disruptive feelings, or simply support to cope with life changes.

I have a passion for working with people that struggle with anxiety, depression and interpersonal issues ( relationship issues, difficulty with attaching, etc).
I love what I do...helping people to manage more effectively and live the lives they want to! I know how anxiety and depression can impact a persons life, but I also know that people can learn skills to manage better. Maybe you have been in therapy before, and are really looking for skills to do things different? I am very solution focused. If you want to master any aspects of your life, and are invested in moving forward, then I would love to work with you!

It can be a hard decision to make to decide that you need to talk with someone, and be just as daunting to actually make that first appointment. You want someone who will be understanding and insightful, as well as challenging. In helping children, teens, and their families, I employ a combination of compassion, creativity, understanding, and humor with clinically proven treatment methods. During my 15+ years of experience I have found that a good collaborative therapeutic relationship combined with skill-based strategies and techniques results in positive and lasting changes. I typically begin treatment with a thorough assessment and treatment plan. Treatment incorporates both parent and child interventions. I routinely communicate with pediatricians, teachers and school personnel to assist in resolving the issues of children and teens, with parental permission.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
