adolescent
clients, as well as women’s and parenting issues.
We each have a story, and that story matters. It is often our story that serves as the holding spot for some of our burdens and the very birthplace of our heart’s desires. I believe each client’s story is important and relevant and to be invited into another’s story of personal growth and healing is among the most profound and sacred of human experiences. As a Doctoral level Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I view the work I do as deeply personal and collaborative. In my work with clients, I place high value on the therapeutic relationship, which is essential for growth and healing.

While a significant portion of my practice is focused on working with individual adults in psychotherapy, I have specialty training in child,
adolescent
and family psychology and work with many younger patients as well.
As a psychologist in private practice, I have the opportunity to work with people in order to optimize their emotional well-being. I work collaboratively with individuals to assist their identifying factors which have caused distress. Together we work to discover the obstacles to feeling better. We consider patterns that have developed over time to understand their adaptive benefits and maladaptive consequences. This approach provides opportunities to evaluate and to chart better ways to respond to life's challenges. I utilize a psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral approach with an emphasis on increasing awareness of one's reactions and experiences.

Whether you are an adult,
adolescent
or couple I can help you understand your individual response to life's challenges.
The decision to seek help for a problem is often a difficult one. People pursue therapy for a variety of reasons. Some may enter therapy to address major life changes, such as becoming a parent, and others may seek help in managing mental health conditions, like depression. Many people seek counseling because they have identified specific goals or issues that they wish to work on. Others may be encouraged by family, friends, or medical professionals to seek help. Whatever the motivation, it takes courage to attend therapy, and it takes dedication to see it through.

Is your
teen
anxious, seem “off” or struggling with getting to school? Is your home environment stressful? Navigating life as a
teen
or young adult can be trying for most, particularly when you add in family stressors, anxiety, school challenges and peer relationships. Oftentimes, teens feel lost or misunderstood and need a safe space to work through those feelings and develop strategies for managing these challenges in a healthy way. I engage my clients in exploring these issues and work with them to better understand how to best respond utilizing skills to manage their emotions, based on their own skill-set and beliefs.

I specialize in eating disorder, body image, self-esteem, relationships, depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, family conflict, and general
adolescent
issues.
The biggest compliment clients have given me is: "Kelly, you're not a typical therapist and that is so refreshing!" I am somewhat unique in my approach offering a combination of coaching, motivating, problem-solving, and goal formation. I tend to see myself as a guide (or passenger) while the client takes the driver's seat – together, we look at the map and find the most productive route to take towards the destination. I tend to have a lot of energy and am extremely active in and out of the therapy session.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
