I make use of mindfulness and
art therapy
tools to build self awareness and a resilience skillset for my clients.
Hi, I'm Jenny. Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed or deeply concerned about life situations, change, or a loss. Maybe you don’t even know how you feel but know it is time to reach out for help. Maybe you are missing something in the past or feeling not up to the future. You are not alone in this. These moments are some of the most important in a life, and it is easier to face them with support. That is where therapy can start. “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” -Carl Rogers.

In addition to talk-based therapy, I specialize in creativity development through use of imagery,
art
-making and metaphor.
Sometimes the best thing you can give yourself is the chance to be heard, tell your story and share your experience. In the current climate it may be especially hard for you to find the support you need. Maybe you have experienced trauma that seems to affect your work or relationships. Daily stressors can compound and impact your wellbeing, leaving you feeling distressed, anxious, irritable, depressed or overwhelmed. I aim to help you gain new awareness about your feelings and how they relate to current challenges or past experiences, leading to a sense of relief, improved self-acceptance and even curiosity and excitement.

I approach these issues using
art
and verbal therapy skills.
No matter where you are in your life, therapy is a way to alleviate stress and build clarity about your feelings. My goal is to collaborate with you to gain insight, build effective coping skills, and get in touch with your intuition. Whether you've had therapy before, or if you want to try something new, it can be difficult to start. I know many people find it hard to meet a therapist they connect with, but it is important you feel safe in the therapeutic space. I aim to support my clients in better understanding how to break out of cycles, overcome obstacles, and build greater self-assurance.

As a licensed
art
therapist with a PhD in psychology, I also have experience with a host of presentations including anxiety and depression, panic, borderline and bipolar disorder, communication issues, and anger.
I really like doing therapy, and I want to help you. Treatment should be about getting to know you, helping you communicate better when you're in conflict, learning how to say your strong feelings more directly, and understanding what's going on in your relationships. While I'm the expert on psychology, I know that you are the expert of your life. We therefore have to work together. There are always better ways to cope with stress and to reach for your goals, but you must first clarify your ideas in order to make solid decisions. Thus, I lean on my 18 years of experience to help achieve this, judgment-free.

Born in Ecuador and raised in New York City, I have first hand experience in the diverse and complex lives of New Yorkers. We are always on the move, going from one place to the other so often that it seems like we do not have time to sit down and get to know ourselves. Our hectic lifestyles can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and overwhelming amounts of stress which can affect our quality of life. We may also be impacted by trauma and other hardships that may be affecting our relationships, our work, our school to the point that it does not seem feasible to live a "normal" life.

It keeps happening. You get involved with the wrong person only to experience another painful and disappointing end. Friendships feel distant, like you have worn out your welcome and everyone is sick of hearing about your troubles. You feel stuck in this pattern at work and with your family. No one listens, while the feelings of isolation quietly build. You’re stuck in a vicious cycle but don’t know how to break free. Disconnected from yourself, how are you going to connect with others?

Hello everyone, please welcome and allow me to first begin in thanking you. The choice to start therapy isn’t always easy, sometimes it is the most difficult thing to do is to even consider it, then admit you want/need it before even taking the steps to start, but you are not alone on this journey. Perhaps there has been times that you have found yourself feeling stressed, down, lacking confidence, or stuck in a pattern that no longer serves you. Perhaps you’re ready to take steps toward changes but feel stuck or unsure where to start. Or even feeling lost in your relationships in life or even disconnected from them.

My clients tend to be creative folk struggling to move forward in life. They often arrive to therapy feeling unfulfilled, stagnant, and unsure of how or where to get the help they need. Anxiety, depression, guilt, and overstimulation have impacted their ability to see the path forward and they feel lost and need help to reconnecting to themselves. I help my clients move through these moments in life in a way that is empathetic, nonjudgemental, and gentle. We all get stuck. Sometimes we just need a little help getting unstuck.

My first career was as an artist, and that helped me immensely in developing an empathic and thoughtful perspective in my clinical work, whether
art
making is utilized by the client during sessions or not.
In the first session, we’ll establish clear goals for what you’d like to focus on and begin creating the road map for doing so. The trajectory of the deeper work reflects the needs of each individual; I feel that my job is to listen to you and provide what you need in the moment, whether it’s a kind ear, more direct guidance, or both. I am always looking to stay current on contemporary perspectives and approaches in clinical practice, particularly in regard to changing views on trauma, women’s experiences, and the mental health of marginalized communities.

Art Therapy
How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.
Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.
How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.
What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
