I specialized in treating a variety of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, OCD, substance abuse, etc.
Do you sometimes feel that life is harder than it should be? Almost as if everyone else received a manual on happiness and you didn't? Well, You're not the only one. Often we reach a point in our lives where we question ourselves and what we do. There are other times when we feel things like anger, sadness, loneliness, anxiety, and don't really understand why or where these feelings are coming from. It is not easy to talk about these feelings with other people, even those that are close to us. But, what would it be like for you to find someone that will not only listen to you, but also help you manage those feelings?

Are you feeling overwhelmed with anxiety? Is your mind going at full-speed but yet you can't seem to get yourself to complete a task at hand? Are your relationships suffering due to anxious thoughts and feelings that may be irrational? Not talking about our emotions can lead to numbing out emotions instead of feeling them, leading to anxiety and/or depression. Some can also disassociate by shopping, overeating, engaging in mindless scrolling, addiction or procrastination.

It keeps happening. You get involved with the wrong person only to experience another painful and disappointing end. Friendships feel distant, like you have worn out your welcome and everyone is sick of hearing about your troubles. You feel stuck in this pattern at work and with your family. No one listens, while the feelings of isolation quietly build. You’re stuck in a vicious cycle but don’t know how to break free. Disconnected from yourself, how are you going to connect with others?

I believe each individual has what it takes to overcome obstacles by accessing their inner wisdom and unique strengths. My approach to counseling is integrative, meaning I draw from several different types of therapy to fit what is best for the client's needs. I hold sessions from a non-hierarchical and non-judgmental position while simultaneously acknowledging the differences and limitations of working with diverse populations.

Less than 7% of mental health professionals are black or African American, making it vital for me to show up in a space that is underrepresented. As a BIPOC therapist, I provide culturally competent and inclusive care to all of my clients. I have helped countless clients dealing with anxiety, depression, loss & grief, and PTSD. Many people experience loneliness and difficulty finding and prioritizing themselves. If you are struggling with finding your value and your voice, then this is the space for you. Allow yourself to see the strength in who you are and how wonderful you have yet to be.

I work with a variety of people whose active, creative lives have been interrupted by depression, mania, anxiety, mourning, and trauma. Psychotherapy with me is a process of guided expression. Thoughts and feelings, dreams and fantasies, desires and fears are given voice -- loud, clear, and without judgment. The experience of formulating authentic verbal and emotional expressions can be transformative in and of itself. Also, as patterns in your way of being become clear, you can begin to consider alternatives, find courage to change, and experience what is commonly known as freedom.

I really like doing therapy, and I want to help you. Treatment should be about getting to know you, helping you communicate better when you're in conflict, learning how to say your strong feelings more directly, and understanding what's going on in your relationships. While I'm the expert on psychology, I know that you are the expert of your life. We therefore have to work together. There are always better ways to cope with stress and to reach for your goals, but you must first clarify your ideas in order to make solid decisions. Thus, I lean on my 18 years of experience to help achieve this, judgment-free.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
