No one aspires to be in therapy indefinitely. My clients walk through the door bearing similar worries, but their real concerns often differ from their initial perceptions. They express desires to "fix my anxiety," "solve my depression," or "quit smoking marijuana." What they're truly communicating is, "I want to flourish, I want to deepen my relationships with those I care about, and I'm weary of these issues."

I explore spirituality, community, science, and consciousness in my work with clients to deepen our understanding of relationships and navigating cycles of growth.
Becoming happy with the people closest to you can be the most challenging part of life. You might know what’s causing unhappiness in your relationships but just can't figure out how to change it. The same conflicts repeat themselves over and over, and despite your best efforts to avoid it, you still catch yourself yelling, arguing, or walking away defeated. We're not always able to resolve things when we want to with the people we love, but the good news is that when we recognize this as a temporary circumstance of our life, we can start to heal some of that pain. We're wired to improve our relationships and to feel good in them.

I deeply enjoy working with queer and TGNC people, artists and writers, people exploring spirituality as a healing resource, and individuals who’ve had difficulty finding non-judgmental mental health care.
I believe everyone has the innate capacity to heal, and approach therapy as a way of counteracting the influence of systems of oppression that can stand in the way of self-acceptance, embodiment, and connecting with others. I work with a variety of challenges to connection and wellbeing, including anxiety, self-worth, interpersonal relationships, gender and sexuality, trauma (CPTSD, intergenerational, identity-related), and integrating difficult emotions.

Goals and tasks in each domain, (biological, psychological, social and spirituality) are worked on throughout treatment.
Psychological evaluations, screening instruments and or neuropsychological testing help the therapist and clients identify areas of concern in four domains, that is, biological, psychological, social and spiritual. Based on findings, recognizing the primary area of concern and setting and achieving goals is critical in reducing mental health symptoms that are most debilitating to the client. Specialties are treating people with depression/loneliness addiction and underlying disorders such as brain impairment, ADHD, anxiety and trauma.

Holding the conviction that as human beings we develop across the lifespan—emotionally, mentally, spiritually and so on—where some may see illness or pathology, I might see a pivotal moment, an opportunity disguised as a crisis, or a stuck-point seeking a breakthrough. Consequently, my view is very holistic—maintaining that the body-mind-spirit is a complex, interwoven field of energy. If you believe that wellness, fulfillment and contentment is the result of finding balance in the emotional, occupational, physical, social, intellectual, and spiritual domains of life, we would probably be a good fit to work together.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
