We’ve been through a lot these past few years, maybe longer. You somehow are keeping it together, but it’s been a long time since you’ve felt you are thriving. Many of us are too anxious or distracted to experience life fully. Procrastination is interfering with doing the things you know would help. Perhaps resentment or dissatisfaction has taken over your relationships- Maybe your older child or adolescent is struggling, Or perhaps you are dealing with something more intense; gender questioning or transition; a history of trauma; a significant loss. You've been thinking about finding support, now maybe you're ready.

I can help you using my favorite approaches of CBT and

My passion for psychology and human behavior started when I was in college. I thought my purpose was to be a lawyer, little did I know that one flyer trained me to become an advocate for victims of crime and sexual assault. As soon as I started working with victims of crime on an emotional level, rather than on a legal level, I thrived. My purpose is to help you explore the root cause of the problem. The needs of my clients all differ but ultimately the goal is to heal. Your trauma is the worst trauma. With my clinical expertise, compassion and empathy we can work together.

It looks like you have taken the first step towards exploring feelings of anxiety, frustration and/or sadness which may have been with you for some time. Those feelings have affected your relationships with everyone in your life. I work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and situations and have helped them grow and develop from confused to clear; from dejected to hopeful; from feeling weak to empowered. My philosophy of practice is cognitively behaviorally based but I use
Mindfulness
and psychodynamic methods, as well. It is an integrated and flexible approach.

Change is always possible. I work from a strengths-based perspective, and I believe that the work of psychotherapy is to help people access untapped resources toward health and vitality. Someone suffering from depression is just that-a person with depression, not a "depressed person"--depression needn't define you. When you walk into my office, we will explore the roadblocks in your life that keep you from moving forward, and make a plan for getting past them.

Since you have come to this place I will assume that you are struggling with something very difficult for you and that you are searching for effective ways to ease or finally end the pain. Sometimes your suffering can be traced to emotional, physical or spiritual injury, trauma or loss that you experienced many years ago, or it may have been very recent. At this moment only you know how you are suffering, what it is doing to you and your loved ones and the price that you are paying. Dealing with it alone can be very challenging, frustrating and frightening. This does not have to continue. Support is available.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
