There are many moments in life where we find ourselves struggling to cope with our current situation. Whether it be a job loss, difficulties in our personal relationships or even grief, we can become overwhelmed with thoughts and feelings that we feel ill equipped to handle. Sometimes by talking things through out loud, you begin to see new perspectives or details that you may not have realized in the moment. In therapy you will be able to work through these feelings to gain insight into the source as well as how to identify recurring patterns and themes in your life.

I work with people navigating life transitions that can leave you wondering, “Who am I now?” My clients may be experiencing divorce, infertility, changes in parenting, chronic illness, loss, relationship shifts, or major changes later in life. Even when a transition is wanted, it can bring grief, anxiety, uncertainty, or a sense of disconnection. Together, we make space to understand what you're experiencing and find a way forward that feels more grounded and true to you.

You deserve a life of happiness, abundance, and peace! Many people see therapy as that one-sided conversation laying on that stereotypical couch we see in movies. Therapy doesn't have to be a painful or intimidating thing! My goal is to help you be the version of you that YOU want. You are capable of achieving whatever solutions and life changes you are looking for while enjoying the process and experiencing yourself in new ways.

You have built a life that looks right on paper and still find yourself wondering why you don't feel more at home in it. You've worked hard, achieved meaningful things, and become someone others depend on. From the outside, your life may appear successful. Yet privately, you feel disconnected from yourself, uncertain about what you want, or caught in patterns that no longer make sense. Many of the people I work with are not in crisis, in fact, they are functioning well. What brings them to therapy is often a growing realization: despite everything they've built, they feel lost.

My framework in treatment is the symbiotic and cybernetic relationship between mind and body based in Buddhist Psychology, knowing and appreciating that an imbalance in one directly and drastically affects the other. For too long, you’ve hidden the parts of yourself deemed unacceptable, so much so that you think you’re the problem. We are all recovering from the experience of living. At times, we all feel off balance, afraid, and alone. Building a safe and trusting relationship is crucial to bring those hidden parts to light. I am privileged to journey with children and adults building tolerance to witness their pain and make meaning of trauma. Through self-discovery, you can move courageously toward authentic living. Whether I'm working with a 3 or 30 year old, I strive to be curious, empathetic, and respectful of the unique human that you are.

I believe the most important aspect of therapy is the relationship you build with your therapist. A good therapeutic relationship is one in which you not only gain insight into your thoughts and behaviors, but you also feel accepted and supported as you work toward making positive changes in your life. My main goal as a therapist is to build a therapeutic alliance with each person I work with that is based on acceptance, trust and support, from which it is possible to reach a level of awareness that opens the door to life altering changes and transformations.

What is the relationship between weight management and mental health?
Mental health can be significantly influenced by one's physical health, so overall improvements in one's quality of life as a result of improved physical functioning from weight loss can have an overall positive impact on an individual's mental health and allow them to engage more readily in everyday activities. In addition, many strategies used to manage weight, such as exercise and maintaining a healthy diet, are also associated with reducing the symptoms of common mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression. Individuals may also benefit from the improved self-esteem and self-efficacy that can come with successful weight management.

What is the psychological approach to losing weight?
While there are no specific therapy modalities specifically for weight loss, common psychological therapies can be highly effective in helping clients make lasting lifestyle changes. This may be called the "psychological approach" to weight loss because it does not rely on physical interventions, such as medication or weight loss surgery, to help clients lose weight. Weight loss counseling can be used in addition to or instead of such physical interventions. Some clients simply seek therapy to address the challenges that may accompany weight loss in general, including negative thoughts surrounding their body, disordered eating patterns, or difficulty completing daily tasks as a result of their weight challenges. In such cases, therapists will often utilize behavioral coaching or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to help clients understand how their thoughts may be influencing their diet and physical activity patterns.

What type of therapy is commonly used in weight loss counseling?
Weight loss counseling often involves a combination of therapy and psychoeducation. Common techniques used by weight loss counselors include journaling, thought diaries, and other Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies that encourage clients to consider how their feelings about their weight loss impact their mental health. Weight loss counselors may also teach clients mindfulness exercises, which can be used by clients during and after eating to be more aware of physical cues from their body surrounding eating. Some clients looking for weight loss therapy may also benefit from group therapy approaches, which utilize the power of social connection and accountability to help clients adhere to their weight loss plan.

Is therapy recommended for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery?
While therapy is not a requirement for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery, many individuals undergoing weight loss surgery may benefit from seeing a counselor. Prior to surgery, counselors can help clients decide whether surgical weight loss is a good fit for them and assist in surgery preparation. Post-surgery, counselors can assist clients with the psychological component of maintaining their weight loss, as well as help clients navigate any postoperative pain. Throughout the surgical process, therapists can help clients process body-image challenges that may come with dramatic changes in weight, as well as manage symptoms of anxiety or depression that may accompany the major life changes bariatric surgery can bring.
