As both a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Mental Health Counselor, I provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families.
Through improving our ability to communicate, we strengthen the bonds in our relationships. First, we must engage in honest, self-reflection by examining and distinguishing our needs and wants. Once we have gained greater self-awareness, we can then focus on communicating with our partners and family members through respectful talking, listening, and reflection. It is through improved understanding that we create fertile ground for growth and development. Support groups are provide for high school and college students with disabilities and parents of special needs children.

I have developed expertise in such areas as: chronic pain and medical illnesses, relationship issues, marital and couples counseling, parenting concerns, stress management and relaxation techniques, life transitions and coaching and addictions.
Isn't it frustrating to be confronted with life issues that can cause hardship and emotional pain. That despite your best efforts a more desirable outcome seems illusive. Sometimes, we all need a helping hand to identify and initiate more effective life strategies. I can help you promote desirable changes with either long standing personal issues or more acute ones that have been brought on by circumstances or unfortunate life events. No matter what the situation, the opportunity for positive change is always present.

I treat a wide spectrum of conditions including mood and anxiety disorders (e.g., bipolar and depressive disorders, panic and phobias), ADHD, marital issues and PTSD. My niche is in personality disorders (e.g., borderline and narcissistic personality disorder). I have extensive experience treating trauma sequelas, dissociative disorders and helping individuals overcome grief. My practice also includes treatment of eating disorders in adults (e.g., bulimia) and parasuicidal behaviour. Although my practice is mainly guided by empirical modalities, I tend to approach each client in an eclectic manner to customize treatment as needed.

As the world begins to move toward the period of "post pandemic" we may find ourselves struggling. Reports of anxiety and depression are on the rise, for children and adults. Managing our own feelings alongside our loved ones can also feel extremely overwhelming. I feel it is important to have an objective party with whom you can share and process your difficulties while improving healthy coping skills.

Connecting with the right therapist is so important. Finding someone who can help you find words to describe your experience, identify solutions to your problems, and develop strategies to reduce your stress. When you connect with the right person you know because you feel less alone. I aim to work with clients in a collaborative manner. I find clients who invest in themselves and approach therapy as willing and able participants find the most benefit. I am very comfortable and familiar working with people who experience anxiety and depression, especially as it pertains to busy hardworking lives. In addition, I believe mental health and wellness are an important duo in maintaining balance. When one aspect of life is out of sync it can greatly impact the other areas.

My therapeutic approach includes creating an environment where one can feel safe to freely express needs and desires without fear, shame or guilt. Often, a byproduct of this process is to become more comfortable and accepting of yourself. Clarity and confidence are newly discovered benefits of the therapy experience. My 25 years of experience provides me with the professional skills to assess and diagnose an individual. I set reachable goals and identify under-lying psychological barriers that can interfere with reaching your potential. My experience enables me to examine the complexities of unconscious habits.

My approach to therapy is psychoanalytically informed, borrowing tools from cognitive behavioral and mindfulness-based approaches. I take time to get to know the person in their present day-to-day life, as well looking carefully at past history, patterns of thought and behavior, and relationship dynamics. My goal is for my clients to develop a deepened relationship to themselves. This work involves us partnering to find language and create structures that facilitate change.

This model of treatment supports people understanding their thoughts and behavior patterns that may be unhelpful in being their best selves. Who are you “being”? How can we expand your tool box of skills to support improved functioning in your familial relationships, partnerships, at school/work and your community?

I have over thirty years of experience in clinical Social Work and am proud of the many success stories that I have helped my clients to accomplish. In my practice, I believe treatment should be guided with consideration of the unique life experiences of the individual and tailored to their specific circumstances. I believe the therapeutic environment should be a safe, non-judgmental place where clients can explore their experiences and emotions to gain the insight and self-awareness necessary to understand and triumph over the obstacles preventing them from reaching their goals and potential.

In my over 25 years of clinical experience, I have found that there are common psychological obstacles that prevent people from experiencing a high-quality life. Many people have histories of working hard to build better lives and manage distressing psychological symptoms, yet remain stuck in frustrating patterns, unable to make positive changes. I believe that the difficulty is not in the effort they have put in to try and improve, but in the missing personal insights, and the lack of knowledge regarding the use of specialized change strategies.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
