I aim to work with clients in a collaborative manner. I find clients who invest in themselves and approach therapy as willing and able participants find the most benefit. I am very comfortable and familiar working with people who experience
anxiety
and depression, especially as it pertains to busy hardworking lives. In addition, I believe mental health and wellness are an important duo in maintaining balance. When one aspect of life is out of sync it can greatly impact the other areas.

Hello, whether this is your first time seeking therapy, or you are looking for a fresh perspective, it is important to find the right fit. I bring thirty years of experience, listening, and thinking to help us build a relationship of mutual trust. Sometimes when you really feel heard, you begin to hear yourself differently, and surprising new directions emerge. If appropriate I may use Focusing, as developed by Eugene Gendlin, to help you find next steps, when you gently bring your awareness into your "body knowing" of a situation. Depression and
anxiety
may then lessen.

I started my social work career working with children and families. This experience has helped to shape my work with clients and to understand how our experiences in our own families affect our lives.
Since I have been in the field for over 30 years, I utilize both my analytic training (four years post masters) as well my roots as a social worker. I believe in enabling clients to work in the here and now to make good choices based on sound understanding of their motivations.
My experience is wide ranging but working with clients who have depression and
anxiety
is a specialty as well as clients suffering from OCD.
For the past 15 years I have worked with adult children of alcoholics as well as those in early recovery from a variety of addictions including drug, alcohol, smoking, gambling and shopping.
I look forward to meeting with you and to encourage and support you on your journey of self discovery.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
