In my 30 years of practice I've successfully treated the unique concerns that bring men into therapy. These include mid-life and aging issues, career insecurity, burnout, transitions; relationship problems; and the gamut of addictive behaviors (sex, porn, gambling, substances, etc.). Symptoms most often associated with these life problems include depression, anxiety, avoidance, isolation, and sexual dysfunction. Because they aren't comfortable exposing their vulnerabilities men often need encouragement to seek therapy. If that sounds like you, or someone you know, please contact me for a free 20 minute consultation. I can help!

Now offering Walk and Talk therapy sessions! Please reach out to schedule a consultation to discuss whether walking sessions would be appropriate for you. Walking sessions typically involve being outside in nature and moving your body while processing thoughts and emotions. Movement and being in nature naturally affect biophysical processes such as increasing endorphins and decreasing stress hormones, supporting the emotional processing that takes place in therapy. Walk and talk sessions can be incredibly useful and effective for those experiencing trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, life transitions or attentional issues.

For nearly 100 years, growing alongside the work of Freud and Jung stands the work of Roberto Assagioli, M.D. and Psychosynthesis. A transpersonal and distinctly western psychology, Psychosynthesis puts forth a holistic model of human development that takes into account the spiritual dimension of human nature. Assagioli saw humans as a vast array of biological, social and spiritual impulses and felt that a true psychology had to embrace all of these aspects of the person.
Scott Thompson, M.Div., M.S., LMHC, works as a psychotherapist in private practice.

Have you been treated for depression or anxiety, but you still don't feel like yourself? Does sadness, shame and guilt still consume your days leaving you exhausted and hopeless? Does it feel like no matter what you do nothing will ever get better? I understand, and I can help. It's hard to go through each day feeling so overwhelmed and defeated. People tell you to snap out of it, don't take it personally, try to think positively. They just don't get it. You want to be happy, but you don't know how.

In over 25 years of clinical practice, I've found that what keeps individual and couple clients stuck isn't a lack of effort. Most of my clients have worked hard to build better lives and manage difficult symptoms — yet remain caught in the same frustrating patterns. The missing piece is usually personal insight and the right strategies for change, not more willpower.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
