You or your child/ teen have the power to make positive changes in order to live a happier, more fulfilling life. You may be thinking about improving relationships, coping more effectively with daily stress, or becoming more successful academically or in a career. Unfortunately, sometimes stress, anxiety, & depression make it difficult to make the changes you truly want. I aim to empower my clients so that they discover (or re-discover) the inner-strength needed to believe in themselves, learn new coping strategies, & achieve their goals.

Childhood is difficult enough, but those who are have difficulty learning, socializing and have emotional difficulties face difficult challenges. Childhood disorders such as Autism, Asperger's , ADHD, and Learning Disorders affect a child's self-worth, school performance, socialization and emotional health. These complex disorders interfere with academic achievement, family harmony, and overall quality of life. Children with such difficulties and their family need professional guidance and therapeutic support from an expert in the field of child and adolescent psychology.

There are legos all over the floor. And none of them seem to connect anymore. You shove them into a basket, but you know you’re just delaying the inevitable. It’s time to put the pieces back together before it’s too late. She’s a good kid, but now she’s constantly overwhelmed and goes from bubbly to upset in 60 seconds flat. Too much screen time, but it’s the only time she’s content. You worry for her, her future, and your relationship. You’re afraid of being a “bad mom.” It wasn’t supposed to be like this. You read all the parenting books. You’ve tried everything from punishment to outright bribery, but nothing works. Now what?

I work with individuals, adolescents and adults, who want or need to find their own path to inner peace and harmony without the use of alcohol or drugs, or the use of rage or isolation, or the creation of chaos as a distraction; people who wrestle with the parts of themselves that keep getting in their way. I also work with families who are confused how to help a loved one who is abusing alcohol and other drugs.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
