Limited availability for new patients. The enormous number of stressors we now face daily are unreal: politics, inflation, war, heat, pandemic fatigue, despair, disconnection, on and on. All of this is tremendously difficult to manage on one's own. Anxiety, anger, depression , resentment, boredom. Zombie states, exhaustion, sadness, rage, denial. If you are struggling with any of this - or any of the other states that often bring people to therapy, like emptiness, grief, rigidity, feeling lost or overwhelmed, relationship issues - it's worth investing the time and effort to get help, get grounded and figure things out.

Many of us will experience anxiety, depression , or trauma in our lifetime. We tend to carry these experiences silently and heavily weighed down by them, often leaving us feeling hopeless, exhausted, isolated, and unhappy. For some, they can also lead to significant mental health issues and unhelpful coping strategies. This pain is significant. Your suffering is real. And, if you're reading this, you've probably tried everything to fix it. You may have believed that nothing could change or get better. I am here to help you challenge those beliefs and provide you with a set of skills to help you cope with your distress.

People come in with a variety of symptoms, mostly Depression and Anxiety.
I have been working in the social work field since 1984. About 25 years ago, I started my full time private practice, and can still say that I love what I do. 30 years working with people provides me with a wealth of knowledge. A client only needs to bring themselves and have a willingness to commit to the therapeutic process. I have also enjoyed teaching as an adjunct instructor at The Adelphi University School of Social Work, where I teach graduate level classes in Individual Treatment, Group Treatment and Family/Marital Treatment.

People experiencing anxiety, depression and personal conflicts are riddled with pain and fear. Daily functioning, be it, personal, work or family matters can be a struggle. Sometimes people may say to you "just get over it". This can lead to increased social isolation and lowered self-esteem. Work or academic performance can suffer and relationships can be adversely affected. I, as an experienced psychologist, will work in collaborative effort with you so that these problems can be addressed through a thoughtful and sensitive approach utilizing evidence-based cognitive behavioral psychotherapeutic treatment.

Whether your healing is from anxiety and depression , trauma, or grief and loss, the therapeutic journey will allow for hope to be found, even in the darkest places.
Searching for a therapist can be a very overwhelming process. Maybe you’ve tried therapy in the past and it didn’t work out, or perhaps this is your first time looking into therapy. One of the first things I like to do as a therapist is to get to know each other. It’s my opinion that having a therapist you’re able to trust and feel comfortable with is essential in building the therapeutic alliance. From there, we will assess your goals as well as your strengths to increase self-esteem and improve relationships.

I have experience with trauma, anxiety, depression , and eating disorders.
Making the choice to begin therapy can be challenging. The task of working through your inner thoughts can seem daunting, but I would like to be on that journey with you. My approach to therapy is to allow my clients to guide their own sessions while I serve as a support. My therapeutic approach is psychodynamic and I enjoy helping people do “inner work”, which is to explore past experiences and to dig deep into their thoughts. I feel treatment should be individualized, because each person is unique in their needs.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
