I have advanced post graduate training and over thirty years of experience as a Psychiatric Social Worker, therapist and supervisor. I enjoy working with individuals and couples and believe that becoming a therapist is a calling; this shows in my work.
If I cannot help you I can refer you to someone who can.

The enormous number of stressors we now face daily are unreal: work, inflation, heat, despair, isolation, disconnection. All of this is tremendously difficult to manage on one's own.
Anxiety
, anger, depression, resentment, boredom. Zombie states, exhaustion, sadness, rage, denial. If you are struggling with any of this - or any of the other states that often bring people to therapy, like emptiness, grief, rigidity, feeling lost or overwhelmed, relationship issues, lack of direction - it's worth investing the time and effort to get help, get grounded and figure out a better path forward.

I understand the vulnerability of bringing the intimacies of your inner and outer world to another human being. And finding the “right” therapist is often a source of additional angst. The good news is that I have trained extensively to provide the safe and healing “holding space,” for you to come as you are, without fear of judgment. I will meet you with skill, understanding, and strategies to address current, past and/or future challenges. My typical client is high-functioning, but struggling in some aspect of life with issues like
anxiety
, low mood, unresolved trauma, or relationships. Congratulations on taking the first step!

Therapy is collaborative, compassionate, and relational. What if you could find freedom from feelings of
anxiety
and depression. People are naturally motivated toward healing and recovery, and that an alliance with a supportive therapist, with whom you feel safe and comfortable, can facilitate this process. There is no template or single method that I use in my practice. Instead, we will determine the pace and style that is best for you. Throughout our work together, I will be open to and enthusiastic about the feedback you provide about the treatment. I will share my thoughts and assessments, with room for discussion.

I believe that each of us has the innate ability to make positive changes in our lives. Sometimes it takes a trained professional to help guide us on that journey. My practice offers that support to families and individuals seeking therapy for issues ranging from depression,
anxiety
, addiction and parenting challenges. Working together to meet your goals is my priority. Making the initial call may start you on the course to reaching those goals.

I am a Psychologist in private practice working with individuals and couples, adolescents and adults. I have worked in many different clinical settings since 1968 and, for 38 years of private practice, have worked with a range of difficulties involving
anxiety
, depression, addictions, abuse, obsessions, parenting, trauma and PTSD, personality disorders and psychosis. One specialty has been using psychological testing to get a more accurate and detailed diagnostic picture of the issues, as just having a diagnosis is not enough and can result in misunderstanding and poor treatment.

Anxiety
.
I have been working in the social work field since 1984. About 25 years ago, I started my full time private practice, and can still say that I love what I do. 30 years working with people provides me with a wealth of knowledge. A client only needs to bring themselves and have a willingness to commit to the therapeutic process. I have also enjoyed teaching as an adjunct instructor at The Adelphi University School of Social Work, where I teach graduate level classes in Individual Treatment, Group Treatment and Family/Marital Treatment.

Good therapy is an exploration of the self. People seek therapy to manage what ails them, whether it be
anxiety
, depression, phobias, etc. Yet these are merely symptoms, and good therapy seeks the discovery of their root cause, so that true healing may begin.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
