In addition I specialize in work with international and domestically adopted children and their parents and coedited the book "Understanding
Adoption
: Clinical Work with Adults, Children, and Parents.
In private practice for over 25 years, I have provided services to children, adolescents, adults and couples who are struggling with inner turmoil and the challenges of everyday life. I believe it is only by truly listenning to the bullied child, the nervous young man, the recently divorced woman, or the parents of an anorexic teen that a therapist can understand and provide the support and treatment that truly helps.

I have worked as a Psychotherapist/Psychoanalyst for almost 45 years. My work is based on understanding our behavior and I communicate that to the person or couple I am working with. I am actively engaged and use a variety of approaches, depending on the individual or situation. I also have had years of experience as a School Social Worker with the NYC school system, working with students who have academic, emotional, and or behavioral issues. Insightful. Experienced. Knowledgeable. Reflective. The search for the right counselor can be a daunting task. When you've found the right professional, you'll know from the feelings of comfort, warmth, and welcome that envelope you. I believe we are all puppets on a string, living this life to learn better ways to love and treat each other with kindness, respect and compassion. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and I do believe it all works out in the end, however, it is impossible to do it alone. Together, we can build sessions that inspire, and encourage.

People often say, I don't know why I do that, referring to an unfavorable behavior. This is evidence of our unconscious. We are all products of our earliest emotional conditioning. That is fine, if your parents were wonderful, loving, and understanding. For the majority of people, there was some form of negligence and/or dysfunction that occurred due to the complexities of child rearing. We tend to push away what is good for us and seek what is familiar. Unconsciously, we will repeat negative relationship patterns unless addressed.
We all are deserving and able to be the best version of ourselves.

Stressful and traumatic events can happen to anyone. We cannot choose their timing or immediate impact on our ability to love, work, parent, or grow. In children, they can cause behavioral, academic, and interpersonal difficulties. Stress can get lodged in our bodies, making it very difficult to “just get over it.” However, even by considering psychotherapy, you are making a very important first step towards regaining control of your life. Making a choice to value your mental health is the key to getting back your feelings of agency, self-confidence, and sense of control of our own emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

My clients struggle with challenges surrounding: ☑️ Grief and Loss ☑️
Adoption
☑️ Chronic Medical Illness .
I help people to resolve life’s struggles and transform via the creative process. Life's stressors can sometimes induce emotional tension, physical problems and other related symptoms. This impairs our ability to function at our full potential . The purpose of psychotherapy is to provide a comfortable, safe setting where issues are clearly assessed and a plan for resolution is established. As a knowledgable clinician, I provide the best opportunity for successfully accomplishing this goal.

I am Bilingual/Bicultural and have over 28 years experience treating Individuals and Couples. Conflicts impeding communication and resolution of self-destructive behaviors are typical concerns raised in therapy. Clients often are looking for new strategies to help cope with life's changing circumstances and to remove obstacles preventing growth. To explore these issues, a safe and confidential environment must be established. I am dedicated to working with care, compassion and respect for my clients throughout the therapeutic process.

Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
